Check Your Puncture Kit

Had cause to use the BWM supplied puncture repair kit today (Rema). Have used them a couple of times before and they've been very effective. However, this time, the rubber grommet plugs had become brittle and they wouldn't go into the hole as they kept breaking. Tried all three, no bloody use at all.

The kit's been in the bike since new (2003).

So check your grommets NOW before you really need them

Many, many, years ago, I was a tyre fitter. We used to use these type plugs as a permanant repair for non steel belted car tyres! They were notorious for snapping when inserting. You dont want to bore the hole out too big either. In the end we found they were best when made more pliable by heating. We used to drop them into a cup of just boiled water for a minute or two. As you wont have a kettle on your bike, may be best to leave them to warm on the cycliner fins for a while, assuming the cyclinders are cool enough to not actually melt them.

The glue is easy to get. I bought some made by Rema at a BMW dealer in the USA a couple of weeks ago. Back in the UK the same stuff is even cheaper - http://www.wiggle.co.uk/Default.asp...cle&CategoryName=&ProdID=5360008944&UberCat=0

I also bought a couple of packs of the rubber plugs - BMW part number 71 11 2 300 231 (or at least that's what the invoice says...) They too are made by Rema.

That's a good point Mr Taipan. In the past I've only used them in the summer. Yesterday was quite chilly so could well account for the brittleness. Thank you

I have recently tried Ultraseal, it worked fine on the puncture i already had dont think ive had any since but unless you notice a splodge of it on the tyre you never know.

It seems to work fine though

Anyone else had experience with this stuff?

Just a quick thanks to cheesy Mike. I bought the glue from Wiggle........ 90p a tube posted........how can they do it?. It would be really handy if threads like this could be saved in a special section, as they are bloomin' useful.

My understanding is that the glue is really only acting as a lube in this case (tubleless repair) and so if off proceed with some spittle!
Some even recommend not using it. Also I suggest you put some cord type plugs in your kit, many also prefer these and seem to last indefinately.

I must admit, I've used Evo-stick in the past when confronted with a dried up tube in my repair kit. Worked a treat.

Good tip. The first couple of times I used the kit I had no problem but then I emptied 2 kits before I fitted one that did not split.
This time it was definitly winter so they might have been brittle.
Another good tip is the source for cheap glue as it does go off with age.

Always had in my tyres, I ride the A4 between Reading and Maidenhead and was always picking up screws and nails on the Fazer and found many in the tyre once at work but had sealed nicely, would have cost me a fortune otherwise. I think it is great.

Ive tried and tested this kit and its much better than the Rema kit.
All you need is the basic plugger.
It comes with 15 plugs as standard!!!!

Not tried it myself but know several people who have used Superglue
