choices r1150rt or r1150gsa

which bike should I use on a trip to Germany and Italy swiss alps etc etc grrr:drool

Tough call and depends.

If your going to do a lot of motorway/autobahn at high speeds then the RT, better wind protection.

If your going to be doing a lot of Normal roads at lower speeds then the GS.

Though either bike will do either just as well.

I have owned 1100RT and GS and found the GS to be better in all conditions. I could never get the screen on the RT adjusted to a point where it was as good as my GS with MRA screen. I also found the RT less easy to handle at slow speeds and on tight turns.

Went down there on my GSA last year, 2up and camping kit with no problems but...you have a choice :nenau

When I took my 1100GS to France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria and Germany a couple of years ago several 'mates' were saying 'you'll wish you'd bought an RT' before I left, and I secretly thought they might be right. However, 3506 two-up miles later I was still smiling. The bike hit 100,000 miles right at the summit of the Jaufen Pass in a thunderstorm, just after sunset, and it was one of those moments which will stay with me forever. The RT is a very good bike but there's a certain character and rawness about the GS which makes it special. Off to Spa in a couple of weeks :)

having owned both 1150gs and r1100rt i would use the rt,wind protection, adjustable screen, fair more comfortable too.

Depends how tall you are. If you're mahoosive like me then an RT will be too cramped and uncomfortable all day long, so it's GSA all the way.

In addition to that.....

If you're JUST going to ride the roads and enjoy the scenery, and the RT fits you, the RT may well be better.
BUT......I love the side of the GS that means that I can ride the roads and enjoy the scenery on it, but at the destination, I can go down any track I see that I fancy, up any pass (within reason) that is a bit shitty and follow crappy roads with no concerns that the bike won't make it.
On an RT, you are limited to just the journey, and can't realistically 'go play' when you get there :(

Ok, I know that this has been continually debated and seemingly without resolution but the only thing that I have an issue with the GSA is, is the screen :(
I've fitted Tobinators and adjusted it to the best position but it's still far from perfect, especially at motorway speed (or anything above 60mph to be honest). Does the MRA really make a significant difference?

I'm going to do a Romania trip later this year and would love to reduce the wind noise and fatigue a bit more if possible :D

Yes the MRA is, I reckon

Why?

Because you have 5 height & 3 rake adjustments giving you more permutations

Add Tobinators & you've got more & increased height

However it'll never be a RT on the motorway - BUT...... Get to the fun roads & a GSA will be more enjoyable & quicker as the roads tighten & get bumpy

I'm GSA all the way for the reasons already mentioned and have no desire for a RT at the moment.
I think I'll go for the MRA screen as they come highly recommended but it seems that my GSA Tobinators will be of no use and I'll need some standard screen fittings from a GS :(

I love the MRA screen so much I have just bought another on here for my `spare` 1100.
I don`t get why the RT should be regarded as better on the motorway. My GS is better than all my previous bikes in this respect including the RT and Pan European ST1100. It has the lowest turbulence and the ergonomics are good enough to ride a full 30l tank in comfort. What more is there?
