My choke/fast idle has ceased to work there is very little movement at the throttle bodies so starting is a bind and has to be done on the throttle.
There is no adjustment at the bar end, so I dont think the cable has broken.

Any ideas?

How much grief getting at the cable under the tank and Battery etc, or is it better to etc or allow BMW to rob a mechanically challenged person?

Very helpful pics - it may though happen that no cable replacement is necessary and that the bloody 'Black Box' just needs lubing...it is assembled dry supposedly to prevent attraction of dust etc but invariably siezes up somewhat.
Do search for Bowden Box and am sure you will find more info/discussion. I pulled mine and lubed it with an aerolsol product with added Teflon called 'DryGlide' - also lubed at the
lever... smooth as a babys bum now.

I find that when I pull the choke lever into the fully on position it never stays there, - always slipping back to about half way. How can I adjust it to stay on?

As far as I understand it... it's supposed to do that.

All the way on for initial start, then at the halfway position for a little while.

Correct, its like an initial boost to get the engine running then release the lever to the fast idle position. Then when there is a little heat in the engine return to the off position. I usually wait until the first bar shows on the temp gauge.

The fast idle cable on my 1150 has an adjustment facility.

Check where the cable comes out of the unit by the clutch master cylinder.
There is a rubber boot pull it back and you will see a knurled adjuster.

Yes the lever is meant to spring back slightly.

This post is ten years old! Anyway, it answers the question I have. Pity the silly thing is seized solid!!!

Your cables will probably need replacing - might as well do all of them. You'll be amazed at how easy your throttle will feel afterwards. There's a guide on the job here

My choke cables been fooked for 2yrs.i just start the bike, feather the throttle for a few seconds and ride off.remember its not actually a choke cable its a fast idle cable which does not richen the fueling.

Mike, That's what I thought when I replaced them on my 850. Made no difference what so ever. I would have been better spending the money on fuel.

I know that but I have to pull the cable and hold it and i'd like to just put it in the middle position whilst I put on my lid and gloves. I guess the cable has stretched!

Incidentally, it is not a difficult job to replace them. If I can do it anyone can...

Mine seized up a couple of times in the ten years I owned the bike, I just sprayed some silicone lube into the cable at the handlebars and it solved the problem. The road crap gets in there.

..

Why don't you put your lid and gloves on then start the bike simply and ride off ?

Fast idle

Then I learn something today also..

That what I do! This isn't an issue! I was merely commenting that I acquired the knowledge I desired from the site yet again.

Buy a throttle lock, cruise control and fast idle start in one magical twisty thingamajig :D
