Clacks , Crunches, or cant get Neutral

mine was assembled in May

I got my bike in mid March and it has the worst transmission I've ever riden. Desperatly waiting for a fix.

Hi Mine was built in Mid May and all is fine no issues whatsoever so far, I've covered 3600 miles and the gear change is as sweat as,

I wonder why some are fine and others have issues it could be luck of the draw on build date.

How do you guys know your build dates?

Mine was on order from about Mid April. My dealer told me about a fortnight before I got it that they had received confirmation from the factory re my 'order' and that it was being built 'this week'.

In essence, I had booked a slot on the production line .... :thumb

Collected mine today, gear change is fine . Finding neutral still a chalange :blast

I'm still getting some crunching into 2nd and 3rd, and also 4th once this morning. This is after the reduction in hydraulic fluid.

Also last night I dropped a gear downhill during some spirited riding and the rear locked up and snaked.

Surely the slipper should have stopped that?

After 5,000 miles my gearbox is working just fine and so are the vast majority of bikes I bet - can't say that I have ever 'activated' the back torque limiter but there again I have over the years since the mid 70's learnt how to change gear and do the other basics that are required to ride a motorcycle reasonably safely and with the right degree of mechanical sympathy.

Yes Engineer I also have 20+ years of experience at around 16k-20k miles a year - perhaps I should have added I inadvertently went down a gear too far. These things happen, but thanks for the egg sucking lesson anyway.

The reason I raised in this thread is that originally the BMW tech wanted to strip the front end to examine the slipper. However they didn't as the reduction in hydraulic fluid seemed to fix problem in their opinion. Hence looking for possible links rather than riding lessons.

Buggered Again Grrr

OK just back from 6k service at Cannons, excelent servive all done in an hour

BUT my replacement clutch is starting to behave in a similar manor to first clutch, nasty gear changes are back and so is the hard to find neutral. The workshop at Cannons have confirmed its back but not as bad as before.

Cannon are talking with BMW....

The last six and half thousand miles I've done on a BMW 10% have been on a loan bike!

I'm getting near phoning for a skip.

Sorry to here your troubles haven't been solved. Lets hope bmw come up with a solution fast!

gear changes

Hi, been into AJ today ,to let them see if the gearbox is as bad as I have reported, and guess what , they agree ,now waiting for bmw to come back to them to see course of action .
Whilst I was in there a guy came in with a two month old GS lc and was part exchanging it for a k1300 said gear box was rubbish. the saga continues.

recall me thinks

At some point I expect there will be a recall once the solution to fix it has been found, it may be that those of us that don't have problems with gears at present may well do at some point in the future.

I am confused by all of this gearbox stuff because my bike doesn't do it - I'd love to ride an example of a 'bad' bike just to see what people are talking about - I wonder why only a few bikes do it and most are perfectly fine.

To be fair to Mr Engineer, I'd like t have a go on a 'bad' bike too.

Mine really is fine - yep, it's very different to the dry clutch I've just traded in, but compared to all the other Jap wet clutch bikes I play on, it's pretty much on a par.

It certainly doesn't like, say rolling into a red light in 5th and then click ..click the last few yards to first as well as the dry clutch bike will do it - it does it fine - but I can feel the walnuts in the cheese as I cut it with my cheese knife.

So I just adapt my style a tad. Every machine has it's quirks once you get to know it .. :thumb

(Disclaimer**!! This is just my bike! I'm sure some of you genuinely do have a problem gear box / clutch ..!)

like it

I like this response it is exactly how I feel about mine but couldn't explain it, I would also be interested in riding a bad one I thought I might have a go on my local dealers demo bike to see if it is better than mine or indeed I have a bad one and didn't realize as it feels no different than any other bike ive owned or ridden.

Sweeping up to a set of lights in fifth them block changing and getting neutral in my dreams...

You know I would probably fail my IAM on this bike purely on the crap clutch / gearbox usage. It makes me look like a novice, cruntching gears not being able to find neutral, definitely not the veteran of fourty years and sixty yup sixty bikes of which nine have been BMW's.

I was recently video's by a senior observer you can hear the crunches as I changed down several times, on a camera that's on the pursuing bike.... I then video'd a buddy on another run this week and again you could hear the nasty changes.

Sorry if I'm grumpy but it seems every time someone writes something negative Mr Engineer seems to have the answer.

The answer is mine and certainly several other bikes transmissions leave a hell of a lot to be desired.

If it really is that bad, I'd hand it back and tell 'em it's not fit for purpose.

I certainly have no doubt that there are some bikes that really do have a genuine problem ... :eek

mine does the lurch into first but i do tend to leave it in first when i stop and sometimes get the notchy second but i have no problem goin up and down the box without the clutch when im gunnin it on my favorite bit of country lane and the shifting always stays positive, if they cant get a fix i could live with it because its still the best package out there by far:D

I sent mine back to BMW. the dealer is 170 miles away. They state my bike is just like the 2 new bikes in the showroom.
I will go up there next Tuesday and compare.
A test:
Owners with good gear change do you get the clutch drag like i do in the video?
Owners with bad gear changes do you also have the drag?
I would be interesting to see if there is a trend. I think the clutch drag is the problem.
I would love to have a look inside my bike, the first thing i would do is test run the bike with one of the friction plates removed.
