Ok replies can can either be a humerous start to the weekend or of the helpful kind...

I have lost the instruction booklet for my Shoi Synchrotech. The inside is beginning to look and smell like a BBQ griddle.

Q. What is the best way to clean the inside of my helmet:eek (I dont think its removable) without any risk of damaging the shell, impact polystyrene and liner properties?

Will a good old soap and water booggie in situ result in the shapliness of Nora Battys tights?

Any comments / experience welcome...

This has been throughly debated, with lots of good suggestions - try a search.

Thanks Steptoe, not too much there but I'll give the bog brush and flush a try and then freshen up with Channel No 5 on the inside:ymca .

Just a bit or reassurance please on 2 points;

- if I give the inside a real good soaking and hand wash action (as it seems some have done) with a mild shampoo is it likely to cause the liner glue to give up?

- if water gets between the impact poly and shell will it cause deterioration of the safety structure?

I have a helmet with a removable lining (Schuberth). I wash this a couple of times a year, just using a liquid hand soap.

For cleaning non-removable liners, try a foaming car upholstery shampoo. Don't go mad with the amount you use - the solvent may harm the polystyrene inner shell of the lid. You could use a mild liquid hand soap and water from a spray bottle, but don't overwet the fabric. A small nail brush can be used to work up a lather (ooh 'er missus). Alternatively, use something like 'Febreze' freshener to at least make it smell a bit better.

I also have two helmets (one for solo use - no intercom, one with intercom for 2-up). Whichever helmet I'm not wearing, I store with a tumble-dryer freshen-up sheet crumpled up inside.

I use Johnstons Baby shampoo on the inside of my helmet, works a treat just give it time to dry, out.

For the outside I can't recommend Purple Helmet Polish highly enough, brings my helmet up a treat. :D

Shoei recommend johnson's baby shampoo in luke warm water.
You will need a couple of days for it to dry out naturally

Take it in the shower with you, any old shampoo will be ok, make sure you rinse the airways out with clean water, leave it to stand somewhere that the water can drain out. :thumb2

Baby shampoo is great.

You'll be staggered at the amount of filth that will wash out. But gentle hand pressure with warm water will soothe your dirty helmet.

I bung mine in the airing cupboard to dry out.

Of course, if you have Autocom fitted you'll need to remove it first <g>.
