Cleaning new bike

I know you shouldn't use a jet wash on thiese bikes, presumably because of the electrics, but could you on the lower parts and wheels just to clean away the mud that you can't easily get to?

After washing, I was advised to spray the engine with a light coating of WD40 - is this right?
