Clever Virus ?

I have a problem with my daughters machine which is proving impossible for me to resolve. Everytime I try to search for any virus killer type software i.e AVG, Spybot etc. as recommended on this forum the browser simply shuts down or returns to the home page other searches for non virus type stuff seem to work OK
Couple of questions Is this a virus ?
If so how do I get rid of the little devil.

Any assistance greatly appreciated

Take it you got Anti-Virus software on the PC anyway. Have you run a virus scan already? Sounds like spyware to me.....

Thanks very much for the help, using a selection of your suggestions we managed to locate a few Trojans and also the Sumom B worm which are now safely tucked up in the AVG virus vault. AVG is set to autorun every day and the machine is back to it's old self. Once again thanks for the advice
