Clock re-setting itself

Thanks for the reply John, and the link :thumb2

I always have an Odyssey battery on my 1150's, my Rallye bike and my KTM640ADV, never had a problem at all and I never put any of the bikes on an Optimate or similar charger. Fit it and forget it four 5 years:thumb

Just like my 4 and 5 year old original bmw gel batteries, only at considerably less cost.

Aargh, original battery given sterling service for 5 years. Price difference at Motoworks only £20. What to do?

I thought the Odyssey was going to cost £119 like NN wants to charge!

And they'll post it to you as well :)

£20 pays for a tank of fuel :thumb2

Had the same problem, no clock when ignition off. It turned out to be the power feed to the dash, red and white wire I think. Found the break in the main loom whilst trying to track down another problem.

If the clock just re-sets to 0 you have a batt/charging problem.

Clock now fixed, it was fuse No.3 :blast

Optimate still says battery is 'weak' so that needs replacing. Just realised I need to take the tank off to do it

Think I'll wait 'till the winter as it's unlikely to fail me between now and the East Midlands rally :augie

Just make sure the tanks low in the fuel department and you'll be fine, otherwise book yourself an appointment with the local Osteopath in advance :rob

If your on the hunt for a battery have a look at these on Flea Bay, perfect for the GS /GSA, high capacity comparable to the Odessey yet a lot cheaper and the mountings are conventional poles so no need to alter the loom or add extensions.

Fit straight in and delivered in a couple of days.

As posted earlier, there are two different faults here.

  1. Clock goes off when ignition is switched off = Fault in maintained supply to RID. Probably blown fuse or broken feed wire.
  2. Clock resets to 00.00 when bike is started = Battery voltage dropping below threshold needed to maintain clock memory. Probably a battery fault causing excessive volt drop when starter motor engaged or loose battery terminals, but could also be a dodgy starter motor drawing too much current from a good battery.
Mine is No.2 and is caused by a weak battery, although Oxford Maximiser says it's HEALTHY!

By way of a small update from me:

History: GS clock goes off with ignition off for the last 6 months or so.

Things done so far:

Replace fuse 3. That didn't fix it.
Replace battery. That didn't fix it.

Looks like I have a dodgy wire somewhere but I've had the tank off to check but I see nothing obvious.

It's just something I'm going to put up with. At least it's easy to see how long my commute takes.

Do you have a HID ballast mounted next to the RID, if so move it under the beak:thumb

Optimates

Yeah.. was one of the early signs my battery was on its way out..I also was getting abs start-up faults. but was in winter which didn't help. changed the battery and all fixed.

BTW.. the optimate said the battery was fine. even though it obviously wasn't. In future I'll believe the bike and NOT that stupid green light. cause it tells porkies!

Don't ever take any notice of the lights on mthese things as they mean nothing!, my GEL battery just went after six years the lights said it was ok!.
Dave Gs (with a NEW battery now doubled the value of the bike!).

Yep, moved the HID ballast too. I forgot about that.

The bike had the HID before I got it and the clock was working fine until 6 months ago. I've had the bike over a year now.

Jeez....every time I wash a bike something breaks. That's why I only wash them once a year at most :augie

Yes, I thought it was water ingress somewhere so I've stuck a bit of wire in the RID drain hole to clean it, I've unplugged all of the connectors under the tank and made sure they're dry and clean.

I've done all I can be bothered to do. Of all of the problems that can beset these bikes I think I can safely ignore and happily live with a non functioning clock.

R1150GSA...Fuse #3 on mine, I don't understand why the clock comes back on when I connect the optimate:confused:

Bikes becoming unreliable, 2nd fault in 6 years, first a tail light bulb..now a fuse:mad:

I've had this happen recently too. I use the bike on weekends, or a few one off trips mid week, today being one of them. I noticed the clock had reset last Sunday but didn't think much of it. When I tried starting the bike today it had reset again...and the old girl seemed to struggle turning over, as if the battery was low. I've checked the fuses all ok, connections fine, fired her up now with no trouble whatsoever. Any ideas?

Happy days!

Glad to know I ain't the only one suffering!!, checked my battery voltage seems ok, 13.5 with engine off. HID's been on for ages still happens with lights off so not that, only happend since bouncing bike down the M25 so recon there's water in a connector as it was peeing down at the time fuses all ok been tested twice with hope in my heart but all ok. Anyway will have to take the tank off they used to say Guness (or that Irish stout stuff) for strength can't stand the stuff but if spinnage don't work will try this first!.
Dave (clockless )GS.
