Clocks lights failing

The lights in my clocks keep going off, if i bang the clocks they come on again, i have removed the connector plug and put some electrical contact gel on there but its not helped. 2010 bike 6000 miles, its not water / rain related, any similar issues before i see if i can get the clocks apart.. Ta

The ambient light sensor sits between the clocks at the bottom, if there is sufficient light it will turn the instrument lights off.

Thanks Kenny, I've cleaned the sensor incase it was that (unless its faulty), but they are going off in the dark and come on again when i give them a clout so I'm thinking a loose wire somewhere

Mine seem to be doing the same this morning although it could just be it's the first time I have ridden from darkness into daylight on this bike. The lights kept going off/coming on seemingly at random but a waggle of the clocks usually got them back on but I suppose it could be my hand made a shadow. They seem to be permanently off now its daylight which I assume is right.

The other thing could the polycarbonate headlight shield I put on could be reflecting light back and confusing the sensor until it full daylight.

Unlikely, the sensor is on the dash.

as Robb said, the sensor is in the centre off the cluster at the bottom, and I've not ridden in the dark since so I'm not sure if it's sorted, however I'm inclined to think having read more that it might be the sensor adjusting to light conditions, when i tap the clocks it's likely that i cover the sensor making it dark, that brings the lights on, and the tapping of the clocks is therefore coincidental... possibly, but i won't know till the next dark ride - clocks are working in the garage with the door closed

It's doubtful that tapping the clocks would trigger the light sensor, more likely a dry joint in the gauges. I have a similar problem ... the LCD part is sometimes illuminated, sometimes not, and even when working it's pretty dim. The main gauge illumination is fine which makes me think I have a fault in feed to the LCD section only. I've had it all apart and it's hard to see anything that I could possibly fix myself, I guess the only solution would be to send it to an electronics repair place.

Faulty Clocks

I had the same on my 2010 GSA, at night you could only see half of the display.
Although it had (back then) over 70k miles, I had maintained the warranty.
BMW replaced the unit FOC, no quibble, as clearly covered.
