Clucking Futch

I have had a similar fault on my last two RS's and my GS, when cold the bike engages when the clutch is 1/3 out, once engine reaches operating temperature the engage point is 2/3 out, when in traffic in city the clutch goes out to 3/4 out, its annoying because i come flying out of garage forgetting the take up point cold and delay at junctions inching out to find bite point.

Only fault i can find on the engine = RS/GS

Mine does the same, does catch you out sometimes.

I've had something similar with my 1250. I've been touring in the Dolomites and riding a lot of mountain roads. I generally mainly use the throttle and engine braking to set up for bends, but started to see a delay in take up of drive when changing down a gear, leading to some heart stopping moments and having to grab the brakes when the bike lost all engine braking and effectively freewheeled and picked up speed into a downhill bend.

The clutch lever not only seemed to take up drive only when fully released, but didn't do so immediately - there sometimes seemed to be a delay between the lever being fully released and the clutch actually engaging. It was really hot at the time, so wonder if this has something to do with it. For what it's worth (probably not a lot) I will report to my dealer when I return.

Just wondering do any who have this problem have small hands and have set the clutch lever back, or is the lever in stock factory position........

I don' t have particularly large hands but don't have any problems with the lever position. What I do have a problem with is the position in the lever's movement where the clutch fully engages. Not only does this seem to vary, but sometimes seems so marginal that it is not engaging fully immediately even when the lever is fully released.

I may alter the adjuster on the lever to put full engagement more towards the middle of the lever movement, so then even if it varies when hot it might still fully engage without delay when the lever is fully released.

This is my thinking Fred, worth a try.

Just to say mine did the kangaroo from the lights after not moving on the clutch release but thought it was somehow me. Thanks for putting my mind at rest that I’m not going senile.

The bike was in for service and under warranty the clutch pack was pulled ,clutch pushrod checked , and the final drive and shaft removed and checked .

Other than the rear U/J being completely siezed on the shaft everything was in spec, general consensus between mechanics and BMW techies is that after a prolonged motorway run (and despite the fact the ambient temp was only 22 degrees C ) that the oil had heated up suffieciently to cause the clutch internals to expand and prevent it releasing and taking up drive when the lever was released .

At least the final drive has lost the vibey nature it was starting to suffer and it is smoother

Wellmine did it again yesterday ,8am and only done 9 miles ,outside temp 16 degrees and oil temp only 87 degrees.
Pulled up at a set of temporary lights in first gear, was only stopped for 20 seconds at most with the clutch in and the lights changed after about 8 seconds whilst waiting for the cars to move.
Went to pull away and even when clutch was fully out zero drive, knocked it into neutral and then back into first and tried again no drive with clutch out then bike started to lurch forward violently as if drive was trying to take up.
Stopped engine put it into neutral, restarted it and then put it into first and it was fine.
In for service next week or so , they can pull it apart again, I still think it is a stcking slave cylinder

Bike did it again a couple of days before it was dropped off for service last Saturday, all I can say is thank f#ck for the insured warranty.
Whilst in they have pulled it apart again and a new clutch pack has been fitted this time and possibly a new master and slave cylinder are getting fitted next week.
Well in excess of what the warranty cost for last year and the next year coming

Just got the bike back from service today and under the insured warranty it has had a clutch pack fitted ..... what a diference .

The bike a 2018 model has always had a superb gearbox and a nice cluch action (albeit with the take up point being quite late), with the new clutch pack it feels even better with drive being taken up from the lever being between 1/3 to 1/2 way out and it feels that the clutch clears better when the lever is pulled in.

When moving the bike about when not running but in first gear with the clutch pulled in there is no feeling of friction and it rolls more freely

just got a new engine in my 67 plate and the clutch in that is much better. With the old one I never knew where I was and it changed maybe with temp.
This one is very nice and progressive... For now anyway ?

Dealer thinks it may be a poor oil feed to the clutch pack assembly or a manufacturing issue with some clutch packs fitted to the August/September 2017 production run
