yesterday i decided to tinker, (1100)

starting with a tiny tweak to the clutch arm, 10mm socket, 13mm spanner,

all going well, tighten up, adjust slack on lever, feels right

remove 10mm socket and the twatting thing falls off the extension bar and falls down into the fkin unknown (a crevice to the rear of the pivot area)

so i strip the whole back end out, remove shocker, and can i bollox find it,

im guessing where ever it is it will no doubt either fall out on a run, or cause 1000s of pounds of damage.

clumsy twat i am.

so any ideas please as to how to find, or should i just leave:nenau

What about fitting a small magnet (smaller than the socket so it can go everywhere the socket could) to something firm but bendy if you know what I mean. Shove it in all possible orifices (on the bike only) and see if you can `catch` anything.
Good luck!

I have three or four different variations on the magnet on a stick, that part of the bike is an area I am not yet familiar with, 10mm sockets like to hide. :thumb2

there is just not enough room, i tried the magnet thing, i tried a mirror, i tried a grabby thing, the only way i feel is to take the whole back end off:eek:

I've had the back end off my 1100 more times than I'd planned  - I'm trying to visualise where your socket has ended up.

Unfortunately the only pic I have of mine has the clutch arm obscured by the mudflap:

I'd guess the socket has fallen down between the front edge of the swingarm and the back of the gearbox casing (there are lots of convenient webs etc to trap it). I'd be wary of riding with the socket still in there as it might just end up in a position where it could punch a hole in something expensive as the swingarm rocks up and down...

Anyway, I have a solution - turn your bike upside down and give it a good shake. Failing that, if all attempts with magnets etc have failed, strip the swingarm off :eek - you might be able to convince yourself it's a good opportunity to lube the shaft splines and check your paralever bearings... It's not a desperately hard job - just time consuming as the paralever and swingarm pinions need heat (and time) to remove, and then you have to clean them and the swingarm threads up before refitting - tedious but necessary.

Matt, thats the place, :thumb2

thing is its a brand new swingarm so i dont want to bollox it up by leaving in the socket,

Why not just lay it down on the ground and give it a shake. One side and then the other.

At the least you may hear it rattle and give you a clue.

Use a pad of material or a door mat under the cyl. head

i have steptoe head guards so i could lay it down i guess, easier than stripping the bloody thing

What about blowing compressed air up from underneath ? you just might move the bugger.

as well as laying it on its side -
now dont laugh but, place something that vibrates near the suspect area and...
..no, i was thinking an electric toothbrush or mobile ph not.... :blast

ANYhow,
the vibes may hint (by making it rattle) as to where it is. :thumb2

worked for me on the Guzzi when i lost one of two allen keys.

..though admittedly the running engine was my source of vibes.

and i only retrieved the second allen key when i swopped out the gearbox...
about 20k miles later. it was sitting in a crevice all that time. :blush

yeah :roll

got the bloody thing out, decided to follow Matts route and strip bike again, but just as i was about to i saw it in a corner, hiding away, so just managed to lift the swing arm enough and a strong magnet on a stick, job done cheers folks, mucho appreciated
