Hi Guys, first time on this site. have been following some forum threads, excellent source of info. I have just bought my first R1150GS an 02 reg abs model with near on 60k on the clock. Engine runs really sweet, except for the CLUNKING sound whilst pulling away in 1st gear just as the abs lights go out. For life of me i can't find a problem. only seems to happen after starting the bike. once running it goes away. can anyone shed a bit of light on this one..:

Thanks for this, seems i need a lot of digging on the forum. to used to in-line fours. loving the bike tho..

enjoy it. They are easy bikes to work on as well so I'm sure within a years time you'll have taken it all apart and then you'll have some more worrying noises to consider! :aidan

well seems like a new one every time i take it out, don't know if ever get used to the gear shift, perhaps heavier boots the answer.

cheers.

Pre load the gear change by giving it a little nudge before giving it the full click in to gear. They aren't a quick box though and it's much better to take your time with it.

Thanks Guys, this seems to smooth things out a bit. like double clutching an artic. have learnt more in one thread about bike than in 6 month owning. Excellent. Ready for next 60000 mls. Now what about the occasional erratic tick over when engine hot, like slight misfire.. lol

That could be as simple as your throttle bodies needing syncing (which cured the same symptoms for someone on another forum last week) or a dodgy stick coil (happened to one of my bikes). When was it last serviced and who was it done by? If it's a long way from its last service, or it was done by someone who may not have done it properly it could just be the throttle bodies need syncing which takes about 3 minutes to do by someone with the right tools and knowledge!

I've just had my rhs throtlle body rebuilt (one Dan Cata's kits). I thought this would just cure the clatter / rattle, but the bike runs better and vibes less now, too.

Glad I delegated this to my local 'Steptoe' to do for me though:bow

Thanks Guys, there is a little chatter from TBs but has been serviced regularly by motorad Edinburgh but no mention of any rebuild or work on them, The bike could run for an hour on stand with no stutter, it seems to happen after a run and not always, the revs stutter around 900 rpm only briefly then tick over normally. Annoying more than anything especially at low revs. a quick blip of throttle and it goes away.. i quite like the characteristics of the bike and the occasional odd noise reminds me of old school. but dread some imminent breakdown, loving the forum tho loads of great tips..

WARNING, do not leave it ticking over on the centre stand, these are AIR COOLED ENGINES and need Air passing over it, or you'll BLOW the Oil Site glass out...... :blast

Cheers guys the hour was only figure of speech, got a feeling its coming from the right hand coil, when the bike stammers i have detected a definite spark jumping sound on that side. its a single spark model so i take it its only normal HT leads and coils. the plugs look a bit aged supposed to have ben replaced last August... my arse they have.. But feeling I'm getting nearer to issue.. does anyone have the number for decent iridium plugs.. cheers again..

thanks Canuck i will invest in some new ones, where is best place to source parts in UK even HT leads are expensive and i prefer originals,,

Always look at motorworks, motorbins and then call bmw. I usually find bmw cheaper for most parts... with the exception of service items (i.e pads, filters etc).

Well if your passing Bikers cove, South Queensferry on a sunny day you never know. not that we get many of them... Im In Dunfermline mate. Thanks for all advice guys appreciated...

ordered some new HT leads and fitted new plugs so will see where that goes.. bloody expensive bit of rubber.
