Picked up a GS with 700miles on the clock. Getting into 1st and shifting to 2nd seems very clunky as if the clutch isn't lifting. Anything I can check for?

Really, I am surprised

First I have heard of, have you spoken to your dealer................I bet he hasn't seen one doing that before

Did you test ride it before diving into your wallet?

Maybe it's one of the bikes, returned by one of the most disgruntled owners, as a not fit for purpose rip-off, before they stomped off in high dudgeon?

I've not heard that used for a long, long time. What a marvellous turn of phrase :)

No one knows how many but there are a fair number of bikes that are experiencing this problem.

BMW have accepted there is a problem with some bikes and are working toward a fix.

Some bikes have had a modified clutch pushrod fitted which appears to have worked on some but not others.

Your bike will still be under warrenty, make sure the dealer you purchased from is aware of the problem and when a fix is found it should be done.

Have a look through this section there are quite a number of threads on this subject.

Oh,and don't let the naysayers get you down it's just their idea of entertainment and 95% of the banter is tongue in cheek.

Meanwhile, enjoy your bike it's a great bit of kit and I'm confident it will be sorted.

simplest thing appears to be checking that the engine oil level is in the middle of the site glass - over filling may make the issue worse. When was your bike first registered - later bikes appear to have less of a problem.

............and have a look here ;)

My bike will be inspected by BMW UK engineer in the next few weeks ,same issue as yours . Press your dealer for a fix that is available , the fix works on some bikes, didn't on mine .

Mine has 7500 miles now and 3rd gear is the worst a real clunk in and out 1st and 2nd is still bad. its no big problem when you are changing gear at rev's over 6000 but short shifting at 2-3k in traffic is terrible. I like to glide along at low revs maintaining a high gear, my twin cam GSA was wonderful at this.
I will be sending my bike back to the dealer when i return from Spain.
This bike is used every day and it is 100% perfect except for the 1 to 3 gear changes.
I am thinking what alternatives are out there the BMW is still the best allrounder on the market and defiantly a big hit with my pillion.

It is exactly the same issue as my 2007 K1200GT its uncanny, just like they used the exact same mechanism, they even fitted a new push-rod in a vain attempt to improve things.
I am a designer and engineer and i try to analyse what is going on, is it a clutch issue or gearbox? sometimes when everything is in sync it shifts quietly.
F--K BMW, they almost made a perfect motorcycle, why didn't they sort it before launch.

Mine now has 12,300 miles on it and has always been ok apart from the clonk into first - yes it is a bit 'notchy' but otherwise sweet enough.

A couple of observations.

1. I suspect the 'relative smoothness' of my gearbox is in partly down to my gear changing style, I nearly always give a little blip of the throttle when changing down (no matter what speed I am travelling at) and my up changes are pretty rapid clutch changes, almost as fast as clutch-less changes.

2. Since my 12,000 mile service the oil level has been set at half the way up the window, this has made a very noticeable difference to the selection of 1st gear, it is now almost always noiseless when starting off after the bike has been left to stand for several hours - when the oil level was high it was clonky into first 90% of the time. When the bike is hot it is just as clonky into 1st.

I think that the 'clonk' is all down to clutch drag and that a lower oil level allows more to drain from the clutch when the bike is left to stand - just an idea???

I rode both the dealer's demo bike and mine back to back, and there was a significant difference in the quality of the gearbox between the two, leaving me with no doubt that there is an issue with some bikes (mine) rather than my style of gear changing - :nenau

ericbusa on youtube, is he the best motorcycle tester in the world?
He is the only one i have seen mentioning a gear change issue?
I have read and watched dozens of professionals testing the bike and non have raised this issue.
I wonder why this is?

Clutch

The engineer called roger Bennett who restores mends makes bits for BMWs he rides a old combo outfit and has nearly all his life
Told me don't use the clutch after first you will notice smoother gear change
I tried it he was right smooth as silk no clunking
Well that's on my 1150
Give it a try nothing lost :beerjug:

Is pidcock your local then PDiddy? They have very kindly done lots of warranty work on mine, and the so called gearbox / clutch push rod fix. Now the bike refuses to find neutral 90% of the time and the lurch forward into 1st is worse than before, the crunching and rattling and banging etc etc etc is still going off. Not their fault obviously, and to their credit they have done all they can for me as quickly as they can for me, but its just took the shine off the bike for me.
Its still getting me from A to B though..........and the engine rocks.........
