I should replace the clutch cable as the outer sheath has electrical tape around it (never a good sign). The problem is I did some searching on here and ebay and other sites and the cable that is listed for my 88 GS has a round barrel at the lower end and a shoestring type at the handlebar. The one thats on the bike is a round barrel type at each end. Not sure if I have a cable from another bike but the lever is magura so I think it should be original ? Anyone know what cable i might have so I can order a replacement.
Thanks

The barrel at the handlebar end is usually separate from the cable, it has a slot on the side and slips off over the wire.

Most suppliers have only one type of cable, in two lengths for high and low bars, with the barrel at the bar end supplied separately. Any bike dealer will have one if your existing cable has a a soldered on barrel.

You will have to cut the old cable to get the adjuster off the old cable, too.

Thank you - I didnt even think of that, I'll pull the old cable out and make sure thats what i've got, should be able to get a cable easily enough then. :beerjug:

Now the clutch adjustment

The new cable went in ok and its clear, once you take one out how the ferrules work at the bar end. Adjustment "according to the book" has not gone to plan. I cannot seem to get the 201mm no matter what I do. At the moment I have 204.5mm at the operating arm and barely 1mm at the lever. Just wondering how critical the data in the book is?

I know it would be easy to just "try it" sadly this is not an option as the bike is indoors and I doubt I will get it out past the snow until first week of May, that will give me a chance to check how it engages/disengages. In the meantime I'd like to have it set as close as possible to have the best chance of it operating when I do get it out.

Just curious as to what sort of tolerances have worked for others in past?
