Why does the 1200GS use mineral oil in the hydraulic clutch circuit?

I know why it needs hydraulic fluid - but why mineral oil in the 1200GS?, the 1150 uses brake fluid and so did all of my previous bikes.

Neither do I - that's why I asked the question :-) just curious and thought that there might a genius here that could tell me. Must be a reason for BMW to change from brake fluid to mineral oil.
 
A little further research shows that mineral oil is not hygroscopic & therefore more stable....
 
Brake fluid, is used when needed because it is designed to work (at the bottom end of the system) when things get crazy hot... (imagine someone riding the brakes down a long steep hill) But it degrades over time...

In the clutch system it doesn't get hot anywhere... so they use a fluid that doesn't degrade due to moisture ingress... Plus it doesn't wreck your paint...

I view it as an example of thinking outside the box and making something a little better...

It's probably why they fit a cap you can't actually remove, if you put brake fluid in, it buggers the seals making them swell, seen it done on a JCB brakes and it wasn't pretty when they all locked up:eek: Mind you if theres no leaks and the clutch fluid rises as the plate wears there should never be a need to top it up until replacement time:)

Thats why I use DOT 5 silicone in my "Performance Machine" brakes on my other bike....:thumb

Kind of makes sense, better performance and less maintenance into the bargain - engineering progress, another reason why the 1200GS is an improvement over the older bikes :hide:
