Hi , could somebody please furnish me with the thickness of the 6 spacers fitted to the pressure plate ?
Once again , thanks in advance for your efforts :)

Thanks Rob . Haynes manual says ' don't forget the spacers ' and clearly shows the six of them ?
That'll probably explain why I don't have any in the bag of clutch parts that came with the motor !
Thanks again , mike

No Bob , It's a heavy flywheel .... for now .
Thinking about fitting a light one . I have both .
I was just flicking through the Haynes manual and saw the spacers ? I don't have them so was going to run them off at work tomorrow .
They're clearly shown on p34 of the 1970 - 1983 manual ?
Who knows ??

You need the later Haynes manual. It says the spacers are fitted on some /5 models and some post 81 models only.

Stay with the heavy flywheel they have a much better feel than the later bikes and a lot more grunt to them which is great off road.

I must admit I'm struggling to understand what your bike actually is! you posted before that you were looking at kickstart ignition modules but you clearly have a heavy flywheel in your engine. I remember you posting that it was a a post 81 800 engine.

You need the right gearbox for your clutch arrangement. What does the end cover look like on your gearbox?

Does it look like this?

or is there a second circular recess on the back where a spring would seat? (ignore the coloured arrows on the photograph)

Thanks for your reply Rob , unfortunately your pic didn't work :(
I'm building a Scheck inspired ISDT replica . I'm an enduro rider , Pre '65 trials and pre '60 scrambles too .
I'm new to BM's but had a wire wheel 80 /7 some time ago . I was 19 and none of my peers could understand it !
The Scheck thing just has to be done ...... for me anyway .
The project has been on-going for a couple of years now but I'm back into it with renewed vigour .
I've been taking lots of pics but progress is slow and sporadic so haven't posted any as yet . Everything is home made which isn't a problem as I'm a toolmaker ..... time is my only enemy .
The motor I'm using is a heavy flywheel 800 . I also have a 800 ST motor and a light flywheel 1000 .
The finished bike must obviously have a kick start . I have an early kick box which I'm going to use despite the fact it ' won't fit ' ..... trust me , it will .
I also have a kick start conversion sort of kit which I bought from Fleaby but haven't gone down that road yet .
By some strange coincidence I live less than a mile from ' Voyager ' who strangely I don't know .
I'll be phoning him soon and putting on the kettle :)
Thanks again for your interest and help . This forum has been invaluable to me . It's a mine of information .

A couple of years? That's nothing:D I got my project back on the road last month - after five years!
Show us the the pics, it sounds like a great build:thumby:

I think we have corresponded a couple of times - so you have my address and 'phone numbers.

Our paths have never crossed, but I suspect they will soon :D.

Rob is your man when it comes to 'mixing & matching' parts from different Airheads, I don't have much experience of earlier bikes - only mid-1980s onward.

Bob.

I have been running my 900cc heavy flywheel R75/7 for the past couple of months, took a bit getting used to after my light flywheel 1000cc G/S, but it is starting to grow on me.
Cant say it is better or worse, just different, and as a road bike probably OK, but I prefer the instant grunt of the light flywheel bike on dirt, although the lower gearing helps here too.

Hi Rob . I've just taken a pic of the box I intend to use but for the life of me I can't find how to attach it .... I'm an engineer remember !
I've done it before but can't remember how . I've tried a search for help but no joy .
Anyway , yes , you're correct . The end cover does have a cast in spring seat ...... is this good ?? :thumb2

Desmo click on the 'go advanced' tab when you want to post something, it should let you attach an image from there. Remember to upload the file though and 'preview' before posting.

That's a heavy flywheel gearbox so you need to install it into a heavy flywheel clutch. If you fit it into a light flywheel engine you will think it fits but there will be clearance issues between the input shaft and the clutch. If you are determined to fit it then you can grind 5-6mm off the input shaft and shorten the pushrod by the same amount. Only fit genuine clutch pushrods into these gearboxes. Motobins/motorworks sell stainless versions but they are crap and snap causing you loads of grief.

Internally the heavy flywheel gearboxes have loads of issues. The later gearboxes were much better. Ideally you'd have an 83 onwards internals but it gets messy and awkward with the input shaft helical gear/shock absorber and the later 17 degree helical gears. I've rebuilt gearboxes where folks hadn't realised there was a gear angle difference and have trashed them in the process.

Your gearbox has been rebuilt in the past (dreadful sand blasting and stainless bolts are the giveaway)Well worth getting it checked out internally as its more than likely not been shimmed properly. Voyager is your man for this if he has the time.

When you refit the clutch arm use a long shafted 8mm bolt with a nylon but instead of the original pin. The cur lips have a nasty habit of coming off the originals allowing the pin to come adrift, if it creeps up too much it snaps the pin support on the back of the gearbox.

Thanks for your reply Rob , I really appreciate it .
I wouldn't like to be going down the road of cutting the shaft and effectively rendering the box useless for it's original intent .
I'll need to dig out my light flywheel stuff and see if there are any alternative solutions .
Thanks again , Mike
