Hi,
I've had mine replaced about a year ago. And after a hard lesson of running out of fuel, I now know what it feels like between that (unable to start bike in gear) and when the bike is almost empty. I've got maybe 1 issue and I don't know what the cause is. The symptons are....
Last night, on the way home from work (lots of filtering on the A40 coming out of London, fan came on, slow speeds/stationary stops, but the traffic was still flowing, etc). Very near home and a good 10 mins. since I left the A40 in pretty much normal road conditions and traffic, I was moving off from stop and then the bike seemed to 'run out of air', lurching forward slowly to a stop/'bucking like a kangeroo' and then the engine stopped. Managed to start it again. A couple of metres down the road and I pulled into a side road to go to the nearest garage to fuel-up. I thought maybe I was too reliant on the fuel gauge again. As, that sympton of 'bucking' is how I related to running out of fuel once.
It stalled again and this time during my turn into that side road. Luckily I had enough momentum to keep her upright and wasn't leaning too much. I started it again and the ignition sounded as though it was struggling. -But I don't know if it was me who didn't pull in the clutch lever far enough. It did start up eventually. Got to the garage. ...Waited an hour as the refuelling truck was there.
When I filled-up.....Found out there was PLENTY of fuel: 6.58L in the tank (filled-up with 9.42L)!!!
Habits are:-
Use everyday as commuter bike, varied routes in and out, not all as congested as the A40!;
Weekend rides, weekly shopping;
Weekend RoSPA training (hard and aggressive on the A- and B- roads);
Garmin wired into the CANBUS, no other ancilliary equipment;
Still about 1,500 miles before the next service (spark plugs were replaced in the last one);
Top-up only at the major petrol stations and not supermarket brand ones;
Early 2008 model.
After the hour (it was obviously off) and fuel top-up, started-up fine and went home fine. Stalled the bike deliberately, kept in first gear and restarted 3 times in a row, no issues.
So, question is: does it sound like a fuel-starvation/oxygen issue;
Usually careful that there's no water getting into the tank when refuelling but could water be seeping into my tank?
Or maybe the clutch switch is failing?
Can the clutch switch fail after a long, hot running time like on congested roads?
Can the clutch switch fail only after a year?
Can you get better third-party ones if that's the issue?
Thanks,
Lab.
