First go with the Motorrad Connected app…..

I thought WiFi carried the map from phone to TFT whilst Bluetooth took care of the remaining data. I think this is how it is on the RT.

It's possible to get basic navigation [big white arrow], with just Bluetooth but if you want maps then WiFi connection is needed.

That’s how I understand that it works and as it was explained to me by BMW, Park Lane and exactly the same system as used on the RT. Now I think of it, I didn’t actually ask them if the WiFi had to be external or if it was integral (interweb, thank you to Onahi for that) to the bike, as it is on my car. It would certainly make more sense if it was internal.

Either way, it’s no big deal, the map sets cover a big area and are, as Garmin can do, automatically linked to each route you create. I have downloaded all the Western Europe maps to my phone anyway.

The 1600 will have the same phone charging cubbyhole as the RT (it has two already) one being fitted with a cooling fan, just as the RT does, too.

That is the case with the RT, Wifi and BT. But all other TFT connections are BT only. I'm interested to find out more about the RT having its own interweb connection.

The SOS has a sim connected the the emergency network. So the RT has a data sim as well as the SOS connection ?
 
That is just what I am wondering, too.

I am also wondering if the bike uses the phone as a Wi-fi hot spot, just to load the maps, rather than having its own intraweb. To be honest, it’s all smoke and mirrors to me. Either it works or it doesn’t. So far, I like what I have experienced with the Connected app and the smaller 6” TFT screen, enough to make me want to at least try a bike with the larger split screen, map capable, 10.25” screen.

When I am at Park Lane I’ll be sure to ask them more about the Wi-fi bit.
 
A bit off topic, but the way the app switches to a nav screen just before a turn, even when a nav screen is not displayed, is great especially if sound is not available in helmet.

I don't remember my 550 doing this.

Bearing in mind I ain't got a clue what I'm talking about.........but if the phone asks for permission to join the bikes network, as it does if the phone is currently connected to a home network, does that not indicate the bike is generating the WiFi signal?
 
The more I read on other forums, tells me that the RT has its own intraweb, dedicated to handling the maps.

TFT
GS and all other variants -
Headset to TFT via BT
Mobile to TFT via BT
Music, phone and navigation. Note, Navigation must be used from downloaded maps in the BMW Connected app.

The RT and K1600 are slightly different
This uses both BT and Wifi from the Mobile device. The maps are downloaded from the connected app. However, they are shown on the larger TFT screen.

I'm pretty sure this is not the case. Its using wifi and BT from the mobile device. It will have an on-baord sim, but that is for SOS

Here. From the TFT group. again proving an invaluable source of info ! And just as I thought. I actually would have been surprised not knowing this after starting the group. .... the RT and K1600 uses the mobile device internet data connection. As it does for all the other TFTs, only difference is it uses Wifi and BT to give a better, wider connection. because of the on screen maps.

No. There is only one sim embedded which is for the e-call. For the Data usage you need to use your personal devise. Android and IOS is well prepared to connect with the TFT via Bluetooth. That means finally you have to connect your smartphone via Bluetooth with the BMW connected App from the dedicated App Store (google play store or iOS Apple Store) then you can use the integrated Navigation."

I thought the sos system went through your phone.
 
Im confident to say Im pretty much an expert on the TFT, Although, not 100% familiar with the RT TFT. After over three years use and running the TFT group. Richard, you had me doubting myself for a minute:D
