As I am awaiting a recon starter I have been inspecting the clutch.

Haynes say replace at 4.8 mm. I have read others say 4.5mm. I have been able to find out that a new clutch is about 6.7mm. How reliable will the measurement be that I can take from the small area that is visible behind the starter motor void?

As the clutch is now under compression will any reading be reliable or can I reliably add a certain percentage on for the compression factor.

Or am I just talking a load of bollox!

4.5mm is the minimum. Easiest way to check thickness of disk is to use the flats on an allen key and insert the short end of the key to fit between pressure plate and drive plate to determine thickness. Leave clutch lever alone as this will give a correct reading.

You've got a 4.8 and a 6.7 allen key then have you, and all the sizes inbetween:rolleyes:

If it ain't slipping, who give a feck?

Put it back together and ride it:thumb2

Looking for a job

If it aint bust don't fix it just ride the bloody thing! , you should not just change the plate as it will fail after a few thousnad miles the whole assembly requires replacing. Do search here.
Dave GS 87,000 on the same clutch.

Wasn't just going to change the whole plate. Just wanted to gauge when I needed to start saving up for my new £600 clutch.

Just wait untill it starts to slip.
It may take a year or many.
Then you can fix it in one day after receiving the parts.

The same thing concerns the brake discs.
The manual says you have to change them in 4. 5 mm.
I changed my front discs well under 4 mm and they worked still well.

Of course not. The man wanted some idea of how thick the clutch disc was. I used this method to give me some idea of the longevity as I would be travelling for 12 months. Put a 6mm allen key in. put a 5mm key in by turning the allen key you can then have a rough idea of thickness if you can turn it passed the flats then its below 5.55mm. Put in a 4mm and if that turns passed the flats then its 4.5mm. :P

What's the point - whatever measurement it is you're still going to carry on riding it until it slips before you change it.

I've had them slipping at 5.3 mm and at 4.4mm so just ride it and change it when it slips. .

The point is he asked a question

Seems like I opened up a Hornets nest.

Anyway thanks for all your replies. I hope to get at least a year out it during which I aim to do at least one trip into Europe. Just trying to work out if the old girl needs some TLC.
