I ordered an update last week to what I thought was V9 for my 2610. I got the disc and thought it odd that the back of the box said 2008, but just assumed that maybe V9 was issued at the end of '08.

Anyway, I've just unlocked the disc and it says an update is available - V9!

I've ordered the disc, but will they expect me to pay again? Surely not when they supplied an out of date disc last week!

You did order it from Garmin, didn't you? If so, ring them & they'll change it - especially as they are not supposed to send out of date mapping. If you ordered your disc elsewhere, good luck :augie

Yup, off the Garmin site.

My order confirmation just says City Navigator Europe and does not mention a year or version.

Ring Garmin. You should be ok. If you buy a Garmin GPS unit with out-of-date mapping, they let you upgrade for free within 60 days; I'm sure they'll do the same in this case. Don't let anyone fob you off with 'that's the latest version for the 2610' as I have got a CN 2009 update disc for the 2610 from Garmin.

Let us know what they say.

Free 0808 238 0000 (within U.K.)

They have said it was a mistake and will send out a V9 disc and unlock it for free.
FYI v9 and 2009 mapping are different. v9 mapping is for 2007, the following year they changed the way that they name the mapping and started using the year instead of a version number.

City Nav Europe v8 = 2006
City Nav Europe v9 = 2007
City Nav Europe 2008 = 2008
City Nav Europe 2009 = 2009

Easy misunderstanding but I've clarified just to avoid adding confusion when speaking to Garmin.

Ah, didn't know that; and there was I thinking my V6 wasn't really that out of date!
V6, ISTR that'll be City Select then. Yes, it'll be from around 2004/2005.

As it's not that cheap to upgrade and I don't rely on my sat nav day in day out I only bother to upgrade every other year as a rule. However, with 4/5 years to catch up on you'd probably notice a few changes.

If you're running a Quest beware that v8 and upward have far bigger tile sizes so selecting tiles around a European touring route consumes significantly more memory space as there's lots if off route mapping detail loaded that you don't need. The older mapping created a narrow mapping corridor around your route with more tiles but you could go considerably further before running out of memory. I'm rambling on a bit.... have a look here.

As an update to my original post - the promised disc from Garmin never arrived and was chased up a couple of weeks ago. I was then told that there was no trace of my original order (despite having a confirmation email from Garmin!) but they would send a copy that week.

Surprise, surprise, no disc came so I called again last Tuesday and was told that it was a different dept that sent out the discs and they would request it again.

Friday of last week - three discs arrive separately - bizarre.
