coil pack failure

I've had this before, each time the symptoms were not identical, this instance of failure was by far the worst.

Just got onto the M3 heading North from the M27, pissing down with rain in the outside lane, bike went onto one cyclinder and i thought it was going to die on me. Hazard lights on instantly, changed this to a left indicator and prepared to pull over to the hard shoulder. I realised that if I gently accelerated or , even better, stayed at a constant throttle it ran ok.........ish.
I was only about 3 miles from home, so decided to carry on. Hiccup was the 2 roundabouts where it almost stalled.

Changed one of the coilpacks for a new one, no difference, put the one I had just removed on the other cylinder. Voila:) I wasn't convinced that it was a coilpack, as when they've failed before, it was quite a subtle failure, with a hint of misfire.

In hindsight, at work this morning the idle seemed to hiccup momentarily, and just before the blatant failure, it hiccuped, just as if I'd released the throttle for a nanosecond.

From your statement, can I presume that the newer type have not failed, to your knowledge?

Did you say in some previous coilpack thread, that the 1200 type can be used on the 1150s and seem to last longer?

What are the perceived benefits of coilpacks compared to coil type ignition.............. apart from improving BMWs profits? I'd guess that there is some performance enhancement, or is it just cheaper to make?

Its easier to steal them from a parked 1200 than stealing ordinary coils which are under the tank.
