Coil stick skimp!

Bought a new coil stick from MW last week. Came to fit it today only to discover that the MW item doesn't come with the rubber seal around the top.

The black item is the old one. Notice the absence of the seal on the shiny new one.




Here's the seal transplanted.




It's hardly a difficult job to move it but bloody hell. 80 quid and you have to do that. And there are no locating lugs for the transplanted seal so I'm hoping that doesn't add to the fun of removing it (I now lube the seal with some silicone grease to aid extraction).

The beemer item I bought last year came with the seal... I don't really expect that for so much money . But note this story in case you don't have an old stick with the seal!

Are you certain the seal is meant to go on?

The older style sticks seemed to go bang a lot because moisture got stuck in the tunnel......the new type might be designed to run dryer in the bike ?

I put a new one on recently (looks the same as yours in the photo) and it had the seal already in place. They are dated so also worth checking when they were manufactured, didn't get mine from M/works though..maybe it's listed as a separate item now

Fanum. I did have the same thought, briefly. But I can't see the stick staying in reliably without that seal. One good bump in the road and it would disconnect And go bang before its supposed to .

My own guess is that because these coils are used elsewhere, where that seal isn't needed, that depending on your source of them they won't have them. I'm going to mention it to MW as I need a couple of other parts. Just seems a tad tight after spending full whack. I'll let you know what they say (yes, probably a separate part number now!)

I coat mine in silicone grease in an attempt to weatherproof them.

I was informed today (I think it was Dr Farkoff) that you can replace the main coil for one from a Mondeo, or similar, which has four outlets and you run four standard coil leads to the plugs and it works fine. Would be interesting to see confirmation of this, as it sounded a good way to get round the dodgy stick coils.
