Just noticed a bit of surging when accellerating on the motorway so checked the ususal suspects .................coilsticks, and look what i found on the left hand one!!!

I replaced both of these 25th April last year.

I have ordered a replacement from motorworks and they have asked if I can send the faulty one back and they will send it to BMW as its still in its guarantee period so hopefully I should get a refund................. eventually.

Looks like they have been on a barbecue or something, hope the warranty goes through.

Stupid question .Where are these coil stick things .???? Are the on the 1100 , and what the fxxx happened to that one .

Are they expensive? How many does the bike have fitted? I am preparing for a long trip and am working out which essentials I will need to carry as spares.

Check them before you go. If you have a twin spark one going shouldn't stop you from moving.

I plan on taking one stick coil and one other coil (for lower plugs).

That way I can get a spark on each side :)

There does seem to be a spate of coil stick problems of late on 2003 1150's, maybe its to come on 1200's :augie

these coils are the new type, replaced the same time as I replaced mine, had them out mid week for a service and they were fine, these look melted which is very strange :eek

i don't recall hearing of so many failing on the 1200 though. is that right, do you think?

You don't hear so much about the 1200 coil caps, maybe because don't get so many riders posting about them because most 1200s are led off to main dealers at the first sign of trouble. :nenau

Mine failed on a 2005 1150. Are they a different part no. for the 1200?

Agree with you about the new type, not heard of one of those failing until now, maybe a bad part...?

My bikes a 2004 1150 gs adventure, my first coils that failed were of the old type.

These though are of the new design :confused:so im surpried as anyone just how quickly this one has failed. The other coil replaced at exactly the same time is as good as the day it was fitted so not sure why this one failed so catastrophically?

The coil has failed low down and yes melted near the top, im guessing that the internals have failed causing a short which in turn has melted the plastic?

I've seen one literally catch fire - completely burnt the plug and lead that attaches to the cap coil.
