Come on you Cork boys .....

Yes, allegedly the longest straight road in .. eh ..Munster or somewhere. Renowned for speed record attempts. I remember a caravan-towing speed record there when I was a child. I kid you not. AFAIK the record still stands.
But maybe more interestingly, it was also part of the course - on public roads - for grand prixs back in the '30s . Some spiffing videos here: www.corkgrandprix.com/videogallery/

Never realised their was a tram / train line on the "Straight Road" must have been part of the Muskerry Railway line..

I was there for one in 1981, road easily replaced by all the dual carriageways and motorways built since then. Here's a couple of pages from the brochure I got on that day in 1981.

Jolly good show there ol chap, cheers for that link. I know the area well and recognise the circular route they took. Apart from the straight road much of the trees and fields have been built up. However a lot of the buildings are still recognisable. It struck me as I watched it that my grandfather would have been a young man and working in the area so quite possibly be in the crowd shots, although there isn't a hells chance of me picking him out.

Rosemary Smith: 156mph in a 5L v8 Jaguar ! I heard a radio interview with her a few months ago. She spoke about her international rally driving career, Sth Africa, Australia, Mont carlo rally.... Very glamorous.
