I posted the other day in the 1200 section looking for some info. It seems now with a little one well on the way that a new kitchen and bathroom are more important so I may be looking to an 1100 or 1150.

I sold my 1150ADV during the summer as I just couldn't handle the bulk of it. I was fine once moving but shitting myself every time I had to put my feet down at a stop. I even had the -20mm wilbers on it. So I got myself an 1100 Pan European but I think once you have the bug of an adventure style bike, it never leaves you. The Pan is now for sale (2002 Pan with 4000 miles in mint condition anyone?)

So I know an 1150ADV is definately out, although I'd absolutely love one again. Today's current thinking is an 1100 as they are cracking looking bikes, but looks are not everything. More than likely I won't have a chance to test ride one as I'm in Ireland and there are not many about.

So how does the 1100 compare to the 1150? Whats the difference in weights, alternator output (for lights and other toys), power etc?

Best year for an 1100? Post '98? Any useful advice on the 1100's apart from replacing the brake hoses and a new seat (change that on every bike anyway)?

Cheers lads....

Well I have an 04 1150 GSA and a 98 1100 GS. I love my GSA but if I had driven both bikes before buying the 1150 I'm pretty sure I would have gone for the 1100 vs the 1150. My reasons are that 1, the 1100 is cheaper. 2, the 1100 feels much lower and therefore I feel more confident taking it back in the woods and feeling as though I could get it back out. I don't know the actualy height difference but it seems substantial. 3. I like the gear box as it feels better suited for commuting and just general bimbling around. I'm not sure about the altenator stuff as all I run is an autocom, gps and a set of spots... anything more is just greedy!

I'd say get on an 1100 and see what you think. They have a really nice feel about them and the prices seem fair. If you are ever in devon give me a shout and you'd be more than welcome to ride mine. Yes I know you are a long ways away but you never know!

The 1100GS and 1150GSA are pretty similar in terms of torque and gearing

Whereas the 1150GS isn't the same because of the 6th overdrive gear, which I dislike.............................the bike loses a lot of flexibility in top gear because of it

If you liked you're 1150GSA, then you'll love the 1100GS, as it's smaller and weighs less

Personally I wouldn't buy a 1150GS again

cheers lads. Done some research on weights etc:

R1100GS - 243kg wet, 840mm seat height
R1150GS - 243kg wet, 840/860mm seat height
R1150GS Adv - 253kg wet, 900mm seat height

So the seat height and weights on the 1100 and 1150 are the same

Blimey, a late low mileage ST1100 like yours is like rocking horse do do! I am sure if you bung that on ebay you will end up with a lovely 1100GS and a nice wedge in your pocket.

It sure is. I bought it in July with 1968 miles on it. The only previous owner covered on average 270 miles a year on it between the date he bought it and I did. Madness.

The seat height on the 1100 is adjustable by 20mm

low = 840mm
high= 860mm

and it's a doddle to do, just slide it in either slot when replacing the seat

just another reason why it's the best :thumb2

the 1150 adjusts too, as posted above
the 6th gear on the 1150 is good for long motorway runs, with a link piece fitted it runs perfectly good in top, plenty of flexibility, (well mine has anyway), runs about 1000 revs lower than an 1100 i think

it all depends on what you need to do with it,,
i think all bikes with heated grips have the same hi output alternator on the 1150,,,,, same as the 1100, (i think)

On my 1100 the motor is doing about 5000 rpm at 95, on a private road of course :augie it is not stressed at that speed, they are great bikes :thumb2

There was a very nice '98 1100 for sale in Rathcormac Co Cork, last week.
Red, 40K, BMW panniers, engine bars and very clean looking. He was looking for 2800E and i'm guessing he got it straight away as the ad was taken down after a few days. Keep looking, they do come up for sale.

I love my 1100 and wouldn't swap it for any 1150 or 1200.

Or you could get an 850GS; same as the 1100 in every respect except bore size. Mine is not much slower than an 1100 in the real world, though you're probably better off with an 1100 if you ride two-up a lot. Again, much depends on condition rather than mileage. There aren't that many about mind.

Sounds good alright. My plan is wait for the right bike. Once the ST1100 is sold I'll be watching these forums like a hawk.
