I am running Windows 8 and no I aint that keen but somehow it has become infested with pop ups, (and yes the blocker is on)
using Google Chrome which up till a short time ago was great. But now ever time I change posts on here I get some bloody ad pop up and its driving my mad!, I have Norton which is also on my partners PC which is running on the same router as mine but the lucky girl (groveling now as she's watching!!) and there is no prob on this computer at all. Is this Malwear?, it's
making it a pain to use so what can I do and how ,to prevent it coming back?. Any advice appreciated, computer is an HP Pavilion 8 months old.
Desperate of West Wickham. (using madams at present no agro and it's bliss!!).

Same problem here. Running windoze 7, Firefox, AVG. Never had a problem, now bloody annoying ads! I've cleared the cookies + history, I've deleted all of the dodgy looking software that I don't recognise and this is a porn-free computer as well!! Help appreciated...

I am sure someone will be along to tell you Windows 8, Norton, HP Pavillion are all crap and if you installed the Linux Windows XP with some free antivirus on some kind of Apple product your problems would be over.

Lets work with what you have. The first thing I would look at is to make sure your Norton is switched on and up to date, then run a full scan.
After that check to see if you have any software that has been installed without you being aware of it. Control Panel - Programs.

David, I know it's unfashionable on here but for the last few months I have been using Windows 7, Internet Explorer and Binq with McAfee and it's been trouble free with no performance issues. I removed AVG and anything Google including Chrome. I only pay £12 per year for McAfee otherwise I would use MS Essentials which seems to be OK as well.

Go into your Google settings and block all the crap you don't want .

Found these, still none the wiser, what is the next step?, I admit to being a computer no nufink it's me age!. But thanks for opinions already offered.

Thanks for that. It's odd, because these ads have only been appearing in the last week or so. It's a paid-for version of AVG so I'm reluctant to uninstall that, and I've tried clearing all the histories. Something, somewhere has obviously downloaded itself onto my computer but I'm buggered if I can find it. I think I'll try installing IE and then re-install Firefox, see if that helps.

Just installed IE10, pop-ups have gone. Obviously something to do with the browser being infected then. I'll just try and figure out how to import bookmarks/favourites then try re-installing Firefox.

Hit the Google tab , Tools - Extensions , and see what crap is being 'allowed'. Pop-ups may be on the 'enabled' setting.

Download a copy of malware bytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/ let it update when installed and do a full scan. You dont need to take of your AVG but if the option is available disable it while your scanning just to speed things up a little. If there is anything on your machine this will find it and help you deal with it.

+1

I'm very careful with my PC and run all sorts of blocks and security stuff, but even I managed to pick up a link redirector the other day.

Malwarebytes sorted it inside a few minutes:thumb

I have anything from 5 to 25 GB of stuff being up or downloaded a day, so it's inevitable I'd get something one day.

Norton is one of the worst culprits by the way.....they seem to try and package their shitty software as part of many downloads these days, and bury the 'accept' tick box in the third layer of responses.....by the time most people have clicked through the defaults, they ignore it and they manage to get their garbage onto your system

NORTON SUCK .

By the way....

But now ever time I change posts on here I get some bloody ad pop up and its driving my mad!,

What are the pop ups for? other sites, ads, or something here inside UKGSer?

if it's either of the first 2, it's DEFINITELY malware, not a chrome or Firefox setting.

My new Toshiba came with a trial version of McAfee. First thing I did was delete it and activate Windows Defender (aka Security Essentials) which runs smoothly with all versions of Windows and is free.

Did you subscribe to Norton once the free trial ran out? If not then your protection will be compromised.

As others have said, you probably have some malware. Run the malwarebytes software as advised.

Then review your current protection software and decide if you think it has been robust enough.

Always install "AdBlock" to stop ads as well as running pop up blocker!

Windows 8 and 8.1 ( upgraded to 8.1 last week with no probs) have Microsofts own inbuilt antivirus/malware "Defender". Personally the inbuilt defender has been protecting my laptop since Windows 8 came out and I've never had a problem. Wifes windows 7 pc also runs Windows own protection with no issues.
Additionally we run PeerBlock 1.1 and AdBlock ( free versions)

"AdBlock is avaialble" for Chrome and Firefox. With AdBlock we never see any ads on websites, Facebook and Newspaper sites have a very clear clutter free screen !

Make sure you use "removal tools" when deleting Norton or Macafee etc. Standard prog delete will not clear them!

Gave up on Firefox, IE and Chrome long ago, rarely use them. We're complete Opera Browser converts. ( AdBlock runs on Opera)

Opera browser versions can be set to run in Turbo or Off Road mode. Brilliant when using slower networks( especially when travelling) and the Opera phone browser is a peach saving masses of data, saves on download usage, faster, web pages are loaded and compressed at Opera's own servers so you use less data on phones or when using turbo or off road settings on a PC.

ps
You can also set AdBlock to block banner ads. If your fed up with looking at Nippy Normans ad top of you UKGSER page or the sponsor box to the left on UKGSER, you can block it an never see it! ;-)

I use a modified HOSTS file that blocks all adware / pop ups etc.

I never EVER get any issues with pop ups and my laptop is still running as fast as it was when I first got it 12 months or so ago.

Have a look here if you want to modify your HOSTS file: http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm
