Coming back from a Scotland trip, I put about 7l of fuel in at the BP garage at Kinross. By the time I got to Edinburgh, the bike was running rough, surging sounding like it was going to stall when rolling the throttle open (especially in 6th) and according to my mates, blowing smoke out of the exhaust - not a steady stream, just when the throttle was opened, especially in 1st.

Having stopped and checked out what was going on, and making sure that I wasn't burning oil we have put it down to either water in the fuel system or some other contaminate.

Anyone know if there is a fuel drain on the tank? Or am I going to be sucking it out manually?

Did u put diesel in?
Garage would get a warning on the tank monitoring system if there was water in the tank and should shut off the pumps fed by that tank.

It seems like a classic case of inevitability filling with diesel. It would be interesting to hear how the suitation resolved. Water would not make it do that because it's very unsightly that the engine would run. JJH

To maybe ascertain misfuelling have you got a receipt? If you have what you paid for may be written on it.

I thought the filler hole for petrol was reduced in size a number of years ago compared to that of Diesel to prevent Diesel into Petrol contamination?

Did any of your biker mates re-fuel at the same time ? If so did they suffer the same thing?

My pal managed to put 11 ltrs of derv in his F800R. After about 75 miles of rough running it gave up. Totalled the engine.

Make sure you keep a sample of the fuel in the tank in case you try (and probably fail) to claim against Tesco.

Checked my filler yesterday and the Diesel nozzle fits right on in !

Wonder why they haven't adopted the reduced filler size as on cars?

They have-- the bit lower down the filler neck is reduced size to only take unleaded nozzles. The wide bit that will take the diesel nozzle is only that wide to sink the filler cap into and isnt intended for diesel nozzles...

Well that's good to know. I like to see how high the petrol is in the tank, and the unleaded nozzle allows me to view past it into the tank. A diesel nozzle would presumably block this view. I've been sweating that I put diesel in.

I siphoned the tank and put 6lt of premium petrol in. It took a while put whatever was in the lines has now burnt through. I'll replace the plugs, filter and oil when I get back from my hols.
