Cornering vibrations, time to change the FD main bearing?

I've had my 04' 1150 GSA for just over 4 weeks and have covered over 3000mls and I'm just back tonight from a 600m mile trip around Mull, Moidart and Ardnamurchan.

I did feel a slight vibration on some corners when I first got the GS but put it down to my not being used to the bike and having nothing to compare with, well, I'm pretty sure now that there's something going on back there that shouldn't be.
The bike was laden with camping kit for the trip and was pretty heavy and I really noticed it on a smooth piece of road when I was having a gentle weave from side to side in the rare sunshine, in a straight line everything is smooth but when leaned over even a small amount there is a heavy vibration (probably intensified by the weight?). If I pulled the clutch in when doing this the vibration was still there and feels similar to a worn wheel bearing in a car when you corner.

There's no oil leak but that means nothing, there is a slight lateral play in the rear wheel but it doesn't seem to be excessive although I don't know enough to know...if that makes sense!

The cost of the bearing and seal isn't bad so this is probably worth doing anyway as I intend to head away again at the end of the month so it would be piece of mind.
I've been trying to read as much as I can tonight before ordering and it doesn't seen to be a big job but am I correct in thinking that there is no re-shimming involved if I just replace the main FD bearing (providing that the shimming is correct in the first place)?

Mileage is 36,500 with full history and no mention of any main bearing change.

Any information/advice/criticism would be appreciated :D

Mike.

You can pull the seal off to check the condition of the bearing. As far as I know no need to reshim, I didn't when I replaced mine at 80k and still good 27k later. Get the best quality oil you can and replace it when you change the engine oil.

I'll third it - my squared off rear tourance is due changing and has started to vibrate and feel distinctly odd on slower speed corners.

And I'll fourth it!!! Swapped rear Tourance for Mitas E08 - similar type tyres without that horrible vibration and noise. Dislike Tourances - just got that one off a mate. Will not be using them again.

For peace of mind drop the oil from the FD. If it's clear and oil coloured refill and ride. GL5 grade, The spec. is in the owners manual. If it's grey you need some FD repair work doing.

How long can this go on....

Yep - I would check the tyres first definately. Any slight deformation can make this happen - no doubt exacerbated by the luggage. More likely than the bearing IMO but just put in on the stand and check for play too.

That's probably the cause then, rear (Tourance) tyre is totally square with only around 800mls useable left.
I have an Anakee 2 in the shed ready to fit so I'll do that first before trying anything else, I have read about some of this before but didn't realise it was so exagerrated on Tourances.

I'll report back once done but I think you probably already know the outcome !

Thank's for the heads up.

Yeah, I'm going to change all the oils this weekend anyway so will have a good inspection and hope that there's no bits in there that shouldn't be!

Cheers,

Mike.

Don't despair if the bearing is shot, I just followed the guides on here and ADVrider and couldn't believe how easy it was. I can't remember exactly now but I think it took about 1 1/2hrs taking my time as it was the first time I'd done it. Now I have done it once I know I could do it by the roadside if I had to.

thats the hard way to do it! Steptoe has an easier guide if all you need to replace is the crown bearing

I've seen Steptoe's thread on this and love the idea of using an ex sandwich maker/toaster, and the roadside fix where you can just use your exhaust headers to heat the bearing. Ingenious :thumb

Happy bunny.

New tyre fitted today...vibrations gone :D

Are the Anakee's going to cause a similar problem when they wear down as well or is it mainly Tourance that do this?

I'm waiting for some oil to arrive so that I can change the FD oil but I don't imagine that I'll get any nasty surprises when I do

Cheers.
