Just in case anyone is mad (and a short arse) like me, I just converted an XCountry to an X-Challenge. Full details below along with all part numbers required....copied from my website as its simpler.
All these parts need to be sourced to complete the conversion successfully. I managed to get the bulk of these from a breaker who just took apart an X-Challenge. This saved a great deal of money. I have indicated the parts i bought new. Taking into account the sale of the original X-Country parts, I did this cosmetic conversion for about €100.
This list is in no particular order and the original BMW part number is enclosed in brackets;
Note: There are enough screws/bolts available when removing the old parts to successfully mount all the new items. In fact, there is a small surplus.
You will also need to reposition the front ABS sensor wire (if fitted) and remove and replace the front brake line. I had ABS on my bike so a 96cm long replacement front hose to run from the ABS block on the steering head to the front caliper worked for me. Though if i do it again, and keep the abs, I'd possibly go a little longer so I could route it differently.
Further note, the rear mounted fuse box on the X-Country does NOT have to be moved to the forward position as on the X-Challenge. It will sit under the rear fairing. However, at some point when I am bored, I probably will adjust the wiring loom so I can move it forward. It doesn't look like a big job.
