Just in case anyone is mad (and a short arse) like me, I just converted an XCountry to an X-Challenge. Full details below along with all part numbers required....copied from my website as its simpler.

All these parts need to be sourced to complete the conversion successfully. I managed to get the bulk of these from a breaker who just took apart an X-Challenge. This saved a great deal of money. I have indicated the parts i bought new. Taking into account the sale of the original X-Country parts, I did this cosmetic conversion for about €100.

This list is in no particular order and the original BMW part number is enclosed in brackets;

  • Seat (52537696756) standard. There is a low option (71607710844)
  • Rear Fairing (46637696759)
  • Left side front fairing panel (46637696761)
  • Right side front fairing panel (46637696762)
  • Front fender (46617696755)
  • Fork leg cover left (31427696713) *NEW*
  • Fork leg cover right (31427696714) *NEW*
  • Front headlight cover (46637696754)
  • Front headlight (63127696880)
  • Dash mounting bracket (46637696764) instrument cluster mounts on this. *NEW*
  • Airbox cover (46637696757)
  • Airbox support, needed to mount side fairings (46637696786) *NEW*
  • Airbox top screw (52537696770) required to mount the seat unit) *NEW*
  • Radiator grill (17117696705)
  • Small Panel joining radiator grill on right (17117696730) *NEW*
  • Radiator expansion tank (17117706674) Looks the same but it is different and IS NEEDED
  • Oil tank cover (46637696758) Not 100% needed but gives better protection to vulnerable area
  • Fairing mounting brackets x 2 (46517696616 *NEW*
  • Bash plate. Can't see part number for this but the one here is better anyway)

Note: There are enough screws/bolts available when removing the old parts to successfully mount all the new items. In fact, there is a small surplus.

You will also need to reposition the front ABS sensor wire (if fitted) and remove and replace the front brake line. I had ABS on my bike so a 96cm long replacement front hose to run from the ABS block on the steering head to the front caliper worked for me. Though if i do it again, and keep the abs, I'd possibly go a little longer so I could route it differently.

Further note, the rear mounted fuse box on the X-Country does NOT have to be moved to the forward position as on the X-Challenge. It will sit under the rear fairing. However, at some point when I am bored, I probably will adjust the wiring loom so I can move it forward. It doesn't look like a big job.

Hi Mike

I noticed that you haven't changed to front wheel to the 21", any reason for that?

Cheers

I will be changing but as its my only means of transport, had to get something else so I can strip the wheels and get EXCEL or SM pro rims fitted. Am definitely going to 21/18. Just got a CBR1000F (1990) for getting to work and back so its full steam ahead :-)

I have done a load of other mods too that you can look at here. Not happy with the front fender after the last ones (fairing). It needs some more thought.

ABS

Another thing, I will be removing the ABS system from this bike as its loads of extra weight/space and I won't need it.....I think.

After consulting with the local BMW dealer and them having to contact the BMW techies, it appears that there is no special computer setting required. The dealer technician originally thought he would have to connect to the computer and do a software disable to prevent the light coming on all the time. However, it appears that just disconnecting the wiring is sufficient for the computer to ignore the ABS and assume its not there. :clap

Hi Mike

Bikes looking great. What model RG pipe is that? Also regards the mudguard, I'm getting a black DT125X fitted as it's not too long.

Cheers

whats your opinion on the lynx fairing and the sr pipe? how does the pipe compare to the standard in terms of loudness?

cheers

Hi Mark,

its the SR Racing (Germany) titanium system. Adds about 5 HP (and really does). Not much louder, but much a much deeper sound, than standard. However, that is with the Cat still in place. Where this bike is going, I was thinking of taking the Cat out to stop it clogging up.....but that may not be an option due to the noise. Will have to see. Maybe Walter will take his out first as he just put the same unit on his X.

The Lynx is basically a good option, and certainly improves the lighting on the bike. I have a few minor comments which I have fed back to Ian at Britannia. It turns out that there is a prototype Lynx that actually fits onto the stock fender. It was developed before BMW stopped making the X range and was not continued due to that. I am hoping that they will pick this up again given the number of people now buying and customizing these bikes.

Ian sent me a photo which I will post so you can see. If anyone is interested, add a comment here and maybe that will help to convince Britannia to pick up its development again.

As a side note, I also have a photo of a Lynx fitted to a Husky 630 and it looks like a viable option if the fender will fit the X. I just ordered one to try on my bike. It will take about 2 weeks to arrive and I'll post some photos if I manage to get it to fit.

Here is the X prototype 1 & 2 and here is the husky/lynx possibility.

Wheels

Lastly....

I just ordered a new set of Hubs and will be having them powder coated and stitched up with Excel rims (21 & 18). These will then go on the bike.

What this means is that I will have a set of wheels with good Metzler tyres for sale. (19 and 17). Not sure what to ask for them yet but if anyone wants to make me an offer, please email me here...

Right....this information from the BMW dealer was completely WRONG !

I took the ABS off 2 weeks ago and while the bike works, the Speedo does not and the ABS light is permanently on.

Thanks to another forum member who sent me the wiring diagrams, I think that I have a solution....which has been partially confirmed. I can definitely make the ABS light go out, but need the correct connectors to confirm the speedo works.

When its sorted, I'll post the solution. :thumb

Hi Mike,

Out of interest, how much were the new hubs?

Cheers Col:)

Can I have first dibs on the wheels, how much are you looking for? ( I'm guessing but postage is going to be a fortune)

Cheers

21 front with Excel Rim

Later this year or early next year, I will have a 21inch front wheel for sale. I had it made up recently at Haan wheels in The Netherlands with a new (powder coated) standard hub, new spokes and an Excel rim.

It has not been bashed about.....:D

I have decided to upgrade my front forks to WP so will have to build yet another front wheel with a KTM hub. If anyone is interested in buying the wheel, pm me. I am open to offers, but not silly ones.

Mike

I'd be interested in that front excel rim. Is it A60 or standard? Can't PM you for some reason.

Oh, and no, its not the A60.....were out of stock when I had it made up and don't really think its necessary.
