Hi All

The screen on my bike has cracked from the lowest L/H fixing point, ive contacted BMW to see if I can get a replacement under warranty as its only 6 weeks old I am hoping they play ball.

I normally ride with it in the highest position so would assume this causes more stress to it but thats what its designed for, also ive only used it on road.
3000 miles so far

anyone else has issues with the screen?

only a minor issue I know but I am sure it should survive much longer if not the life time of the bike itself.

No issues with mine, but if BMW don't play ball on the warranty, I have a spare one you can buy.:thumb

It should be replaced with no issues at all, hell if the bike is only six weeks old manufacturing fault or fitting fault swap with no problem.

no problem

Well I eventually found time to call in @ NOG. Very helpful bunch they are too and with no quibbles whatsoever a new screen on order and a booked time to replace it under warranty.

Nutty thank you very much for the offer though a kind gesture and well appreciated.

I've just noticed 3 hairline cracks in my tinted screen, top right fixings :blast

I did notice on the original clear one I replaced, it too, had a few cracks around the holes,

mines on the highest setting ,and it don't half bounce about ,

just rang the dealer, He's looking into it (lol) for me ;)

I'm getting paranoid, so went into the garage to check, and theres no cracks on them (for now:D).:beerjug:

Hi yes mine is mainly on the upper setting and does seem to move about a lot over bumps, mine is being changed this weekend, there is still only the one crack from the lowest fixing L/H side. also the small wind deflector screen had a piece snap off from the fixing hole but this cant be seen I just happen to notice the bit on top of the headlamp if I had been still riding it would have disappeared and I wouldn't have known about it.

I noticed my deflector had cracked around the mounting holes on both sides when I replaced it today.

stainless steel one ?

Hi Nutty
I think I shall be buying a stainless powder coated one from Mark. As you have to remove it now and then to clean it properly so it will most likely break even more then, and I have to say the metal ones do look good, and will obviously last too.

Terry :D

The screens on 1200 series bikes have been evidencing small cracks radiating out from the bolt holes since day one.

Either it's disgraceful for a premium priced motorcycle, designed to go around the world, rendering it not fit for purpose, ruining the ownership experience. Or it's not.

I may have over tightened the original plastic one when I refitted it the last time.:blast No chance of that with the stainless one.:D:beerjug:

still shouldnt crack

Hi Nutty
It still shouldn't crack as it locates over two lugs so the side deflectors that cover the fixing points only fits flush. I think the material used is just too brittle. Polycarbonate like the helmet visors would have been more robust.

Like I said its not a major fault, but I suppose it depends how many issues are reported whether the materials are changed.
I did send detailed info and pictures to BMW headquarters which I know were passed on to the relevant team to investigate. Not that I can influence anything but at least I know they know of any issues. If they are as serious about issues as the department I work for there will definitely be thorough tests and investigations taking place.

oh.... and the winglets on the GSA variant cracked, too. That's something to look forward to.

Drill a very small hole at the end of the crack to stop it spreading.

Then you can worry over more important things :D

Like what's going to fail next on the superior, expensive German uber machine !

It's the truth isn't it ?

Errm No its not the truth :blast the bike is fantastic, its a major leap forwards read the magazine reports. or even go out and have a test ride on one, I doubt you have one or ridden one or you wouldn't be making your comment.

Yes things break or fail on anything, but this bike so far for me is the best ive ever owned, yes a few people have teething issues this is a new launch bike.

would I buy another based on my experience so far with it (4700 miles) yes definitely. Its currently the best selling motorcycle in the world and I know why.
