Anyone else have the issue?
When I park up in the garage and connect the BMW charger plus, sometimes the sat nav (6) powers up, then a minute or so later it’ll do the power off, most times it doesn’t do it straightaway, occasionally it’ll come on of it’s own accord later on.
Last night I parked up, put the charger on and everything was fine, went back and checked it several times, fine.
About three hours later I went in the garage and the sat nav was on.
Several times I’ve got the bike out and the sat nav has been flat, presumably because it’s come on and I’ve not noticed it.
I don’t think it’s anything to do with the sat nav and think it’s likely the cradle/charger triggering the sat nav on but not providing enough power to maintain the battery.
Everything is as it should be when using the bike and I’ve not noticed it happening when I’m parked up out and about, so assume it’s something to do with the charger somehow partially powering the cradle to start up the sat nav, then sometimes it’ll depower (made that word up) the cradle and the sat nav goes off.
Obviously when using the bike regularly I don’t always need to be connecting the charger but that’s not the point, it’s a routine of mine that I’ve done with every bike because I don’t when I may go out next.
Anyway, it’s annoying.

Do you deliberately switch off the satnav before switching off the ignition? Maybe it's worth a try or perhaps that's Bollox.

Are we to assume that the cradle is powered using BMW’s bespoke (ie factory fitted) ‘Sat Nav Prep’ or whatever it’s called.

Or….

Is it powered by some other means?

Me? I’d start by gently cleaning the pins and contacts of the device and the cradle. If that doesn’t work, I’d check and clean the connection between the cradle and wherever it receives its power from. If none of that works, report back.

PS Why not take the device out of the cradle? At least that will stop it potentially flattening the bike’s battery and negate you nipping into the garage every five minutes.

PPS Is there anything else on the bike (a powered phone cradle, for example, or camera) which might be coming live and turning the whole subsidiary electrical feeds on?

You can’t switch it off before without removing it because the button is at the back, when the ignition is switched off it says ‘power lost, turn off in 20 seconds” or something like that, then shuts down.

It’s a pain taking it off each time and it’s supposed to be left on.
I never had this issue on my 1250.
There’s nothing else powered from the cradle, I’ll try cleaning the contacts though.
I’m going to see if it happens when I put it away without connecting the charger because I don’t recall it ever happening whilst parked up, I suspect it’s something to do with the charger being connected.

Mine does the same IE , plug the BMW charger into the bikes 12v outlet near the rh side of the TFT screen. Switch the charger on and shortly afterwards the Nav VI powers up. About 30 secs later the Satnav gives the "no power" message and shuts down.
I haven't checked afterwards to see if it ever powers the Satnav up again but ive never had the problem if the Satnav being flat when I come to use the bike.

Would assume if the satnav ever did power up again while the charger was connected it would be because it was receiving power & so it shouldn't go flat??.

I have had it in the past where if the satnav has been left on the bike for maybe 3 weeks?? (without the charger on), & Without using the bike, then the satnav has had a flat battery. It then takes quite a while before it will switch on again after you start riding the bike.

I have read that the Navs don't actually shutdown completely even when you select the option to switch off when the bike is turned off. They just go into a deep sleep but still have a small drain on their battery??. Could this be happening to yours if the bike hasn't been used for a few weeks and the Satnav would run down regardless of whether a charger was connected or not??.

When I went out on it yesterday it’d only been in the garage four days and the nav was nearly flat. It’s only because we use our garage regularly that I’ve noticed it being on when it shouldn’t be. What you describe is exactly what mine does, though not every time, last night as said I parked it, connected the charger to the socket near the TFT and no reaction from the sat nav, went in the garage a couple of times for other things and no bother. Wife comes home in her car around three hours later and it’s lit up.
I would imagine that the power set up on the mount is that it triggers the nav on ignition being switched on, then provides power once the engine is running.
On my 2021 R1250GS I used an Optimate BMW Canbus charger through the seat side mounted socket and never had this,
though did have flat sat nav if left for weeks because as you said they remain live.
If I know I’ll be leaving it a good while I’ll be taking the nav off, but when using it regularly this shouldn’t be necessary.

I have had the same, and have also had it trip the house rcd on a couple of occasions shutting down all the power points. I now always remove the nav6 before putting bike on charge. The charger is the latest black bmw charger set to lithium mode.

I can't imagine how the Nav could trip your house RCD ?? It has no direct connect to the mains to trip the RCD, it only charges on 5v usb. The charger plugs into the mains.

Well it does the only time it trips when the charger kicks in, and it is attached as it is plugged in to a 13 amp power socket, that is how it works !

He probably means to charger.
No I mean the house rcd, it cuts out all the house sockets when flips, I just have to flick the switch back. Also get a similar thing sometimes when a house bulb blows. Very sensitive are the electrics.

The RCD tripping can't be anything to do with the Nav Vi being left on the bike though . The charger possibly but again unlikely, it's more likely something in your mains socket or wiring that has a problem.

Only ever happened when the charger in use ? Never happened when the nav6 not in the cradle. However back on charge currently and with the nav in the topbox, so will see tonight. Not using the bike for the next 5 days so will remain on the charger, will wait and see.

Other thing you could try is to plug something else with a highish load (a fan heater perhaps) into the socket instead of the BMW charger. That may show up a fault in the 13amp socket or wiring if there is one & trip your RCD.
