Drop he engine and vapour blast it is the only real way.
I cleaned one of mine up with wd40 and a small brass wire brush in a circular motion. Took a long time but actually came up mint.

I guess you are right, but I don’t want to go to those lengths. I’d rather make it dirtier than clean the whole engine.
Maybe it would look much better if you carefully hand painted with a few coats of matt black heat resistant stone chip? Start with a coat of etch primer specifically for aluminium. I did this with the front of my previous RT TC engine, came up great.
Why does sour milk come to mind? (I'm thinking you want it back to before)
Yes, I do want it to look like the rest of the engine rather than make it shiny or black. Sour milk eh? What could possibly go wrong
I have used this before on crankcases that were stained or an uneven colour and it came out well.
'Pewter' is a decent match for airhead crankcase.
Or go over the whole lot with a green scotchbrite pad and Solvol Autosol.

As above. I've heard lots of positive reports re RubnBuff. I was also going to suggest the scotchbrite and a mild abrasive solution. Maybe try that first?
Stonework. Also (apparently) cow slurry...
