Crankshaft seal

It looks as if I need to replace the crankshaft seal on my 1989 R100GS.

Firstly, is this straightforward and secondly, apart from lubing the splines and possibly fitting a new clutch, what else should I do by way of preventitive maintenance whilst I've got the gearbox out?

Check the gear box is not the leak as in my case. The reconditioned gear box sold to me by shilocks , which had a earlier shaft (with out the oils seal in the end) should have a Felt seal wrapped the push rod which you would need to change the clutch arm and end cover.

mark the position of the flywheel, pressure and clutch plate when you take it off. these are usually lined up so they balance, otherwise it could result in some vibration.

As for that seal, measure how far it is tapped in before removing. I pulled mine out with a pair of pliers and then carefully tapped in the new one with a mallet and a piece of wood, making sure it is tapped in evenly to the depth that was measured earlier. This is probably not the best way to do it, the Pro's will give better advise no doubt.

Clutch doesnt necessarily have to be replaced. I submerged my plates in benzene for about a day and then took it out and set it on fire to burn of any residue. Worked fine after that.
