I am in the process of tidying up what is apparently a crating tool which belonged to a relative of Magnet who is no longer with us. We found it in the garage of her parent’s home which has now been sold and Magnet thought it would be a nice idea to refurbish it to a point where it could be displayed.
The original owner was a docker in London, when London had a working port which dates it somewhat.
When we found the tool it was pretty rusty so I started with some rust converter which in truth got rid of most of the rust but since then it’s been a bit of a pain removing the residue with various grades of sandpaper, manually and with an Erbauer sander. It’s taken a while and patient isn’t in truth my strong point. I can continue to plug away in an odd half hour unless anyone has a suggestion to speed the process up without blasting or using anything too aggressive?
Any suggestions about whether to coat the metal at the end of the process would also be welcome. I think the plan is to put in a display box/case but that hasn’t really been discussed.
