Cruise control issue

I've just come back from a trip to Scotland and used the cruise control quite a lot but it kept cutting out, as soon as I pressed resume it came back on. It could be related to an issue on the throttle side as it didn't happen if I kept a firm grip on the throttle which defeats the object. If I loosened my grip the slightest bump in the road would cause it to cut out.

Its a 2018 1200GSA, I've only owned it since October but have used the cruise a few times without issue.

Anyone had a similar problem or where I should be looking? Cheers.

there's a microswitch on the throttle that is supposed to deactivate the cruise control if you overclose the throttle. Sounds like your switch is too sensitive. Check something isn't fouling the switch that activates it too early.

I don’t think it’s in the manual but you can cancel the cruise control by rolling the throttle forwards (it’s the smoothest way of canceling it)

Are you maybe holding the grips tightly with the throttle closed and inadvertently canceling it? If not maybe the switch is dodgy

Thanks for the tip, the throttle is the same as my previous bike but the was happening with my hand off the throttle completely.

I'll have a look at the microswitch

There’s several things that will cancel the cruise control……clutch, brakes, throttle.

Somewhere, somehow, one of those is being activated.

I did wonder if my fat feet were touching the rear brake but the person following didn't see a light come on, I was looking around the throttle area as it seemed not to happen when I held the throttle in the closed position. Will start there and move to the other switches.

In a silent surroundig, with the engine off, start slowly squeezing the clutch lever. and put your ear close to it There should be two clicks you can hear. The travel to the first one is very short and to the second one is almost all the way to the handlebars. I don't know which click cancels the cruise control but I guess it's the first one.
I, on my bike, had a problem with no starting/cranking when bike was parked in gear. I would squeeze the clutch lever but no crank. Then I listened for the clicks and understood that second click, that is supposed to be cluse to handlebars, was not there. Adjusted my aftermarket lever and the second click was there again.

Brake light won’t always come on if your just resting your foot on the brake pedal , it all depends on we’re the brake light switch is set at , they are adjustable.

surely the cruise control deactivation uses the signal from the same switch that controls the brake light?

I had a brief motorway bit last evening so tried this - on my GS (2y9m and 7000m) it does not seem to cancel by relaxing the grip, but a firm close of the throttle does gently / smoothly disengage the cruise - it is necessary to roll the grip closed, and then a bit more.

anyway, thanks for this tip, I was previously unaware of it.

My 1250 does the same thing, hit an expansion joint on the motorway and it lurches out of cruise control, bloody annoying.
My brilliant dealer tells me that it's me resting my feet on either the gear lever or rear brake.
I'll ring them next week and tell them to look at this thread....

Brake light won’t always come on if your just resting your foot on the brake pedal , it all depends on we’re the brake light switch is set at , they are adjustable.

I think you will find brake light is activated by pressure in the hydraulic unit and is not adjustable

It has to be your right hand twisting a bit when you hit an expansion joint on motorway and that cancels the cruise control. On my 2021 GS (came without cruise control) I installed (at the dealer) the package of cruise control + activation of DRL inside the headlight. For that I had to purchase new left handlebars switch and throttle grip. I refused buying new throttle grip as the only different function would be cancelling cruise control by twisting it oposite way. As I knew that it was not mandatory for cruise control to work, they installed new switch and activated cruise control and DRL, and everything is working well.
Now I'm glad I've done it that way as I've never cancelled the cruise control on bumpy roads.

Definitely not the throttle twisting as I wasn't holding it when it cancelled, it looks like it was the microswitch, lots of contact cleaner seems to have sorted it, had a run out yesterday and all seems OK now

Sometimes, almost always, pressing back on the cruise control switch turns it off.

I can turn it on by pressing it forward alright, but pressing it back turns it off instead of reducing cruise speed.

BMW says it's £1500 for a new left-hand control cube.

Just tap it momentarily back or forth to change speed, don’t hold it back or forward for too long

Well I can tell you it's not me holding the throttle because the first time it happened I was adjusting my jacket and didn't have my hand on the throttle....So there.....

Light tapping it backward turns off Cruise Control, but it used to reduce cruise speed. It's been like this since the bike got really wet once hah.
Tapping it forward increases cruise speed.
