Cruise control standard on a GS

I had no idea that cruise control came standard on 1200s... Just flick the heated grips on and hey presto it keeps accelerating! Wondered if any of you had any ideas how I might deal with this... Put on the heated grips today to relieve a bit of arthritis in my right hand after 2 hours of riding. The accelerator grip stuck. Flicked them off and it was back to normal. I know little about electrics but if anyone has any knowledge of how to deal with this I would be most grateful - a sort of "R1200GS heated grips Maintenance for Dummies" would suit me.

Cheers!

The grip expands when heated... you need to slide the rubber part away from where it binds... Had this on a WOBMW rental bike last year... never fixed it though, so can't exactly help you.

If you can't slide it, perhaps some sand-paper to wear it down some?

It's a fairly common 'feature' on RTs too. The easiest cure is to remove the bar end-weight, put a washer underneath it and remount the weight. This spaces the end-weight away from the grip and allows room for thermal expansion without binding.

DAMHIK (A1, November, 75mph, couldn't close throttle, eek!!!)

Or move the mirror/switch gear(and hence throttle) inwards away from the bar end allowing free movement of said throttle.:bounce1 (1 or 2mm will do, 1/16" for old farts:rob)

This will require tools (torx thingys):thumb2 Easypeesychocolatesqueezy!

Had the same problem/feature on my GS and within a couple of minutes of mentioning at my local BMW dealer's service desk, a technician had it sorted. As mentioned earlier in the thread they used a washer. BMW Mottorad Central West, faster than MacDonalds :thumb

Yes, this is damned dangerous, there should be a recall!
Jap bikes wouldn't do this, shameful German engineering again  ;)

Precisely... I've just done a 6 country tour of Europe and the 1200 behaved faultlessly.. Had to find something to complain about!

Thanks chaps for the advice - all sounds 'nice n easy'.

Why didnt they jus move the throttle/switch gear along a bit?:nenau Its really easy to do!

Mine did it and thats what they did at CW motorcycles! Ive since had to replace the heated grips and it did it again, so I adjusted it, no washers, nofuss, no worries!

My guess is that it either binds one way, or the other.... One fix would be move the switch gear... the other, the washer...

Thanks for that but I must be doing something wrong. Followed that advice, placed a steel washer between the bar end and the grip, tightened it up (just enough to prevent the handguard from moving but not over tight) but found that the accelerator wouldn't move at all. Took the washer off and put it all back together and the accelerator moved freely. (This was done without the heated grips on or riding the bike - can't ride it for a while owing to an operation). Any ideas?
