Custom made ear plugs

pardon?

i wish i could get the gloop out myself, never found a way short of an ear valet at the doctors.

Should have added a :) as well....

anyway, I am very interested in a set of cutom fit monitors. £150 is a LOT, but if they last then I don't mid. They look VERY fragile in the pictures...seem esp. vulnerable during helment removal.

I bought a set of DIY custom plugs at the Scottish motorcycle show for £10. Dead easy to make but I was not sure just how effective they were.

They are not effective now... they are lost... I could't bring myself to spend £150 on something that could be so easily lost or broken... never buy expensive sunglasses for the same reason.

I find the more items cost, the more you look after them ;)

You pays yer money......

There isn't a problem with removal of your helmet with the monitors being flush to your ears....just make sure you don't try to remove the plugs from your ears by tugging on the cables....

as Steptoe mentions, if you're spending Lots...you'll take care of them....

oh, and a second vote for clear finish, easy to see if there is a blockage...:thumb

Your not comparing like-for-like. A pair of custom-made plain earplugs is around fifty quid. Only gets more expensive if you add ear monitors and stuff.

Many thanks again........

I guess allot of you use either or both intercomm and mp3 stuff - I only need them to keep me sane and for them to be uber comfortable.

I have contacted Ultimate for a place up here in Haggis land - still like the idea of the custommadeplugs (thanks Skyenet) and nearly choked in laughter at the suggestion of using decorators caulk!!!:D

Cheers all:beerjug:

Eeeek!

Custom Ear Protection, Ultimate and Green Leopard only charge approx £50 for a set.

I'd not thought of clear silicone for the Ultimate monitors. I selected yellow so that they'd be readily visible after I put them somewhere safe ....

I'm very happy with my Green Leopards. Fill Schianni is a top man. I have a normal set and a set with monitors. Both are excellent.

mikepg - Re. diy earplugs. Bought mine off eBay. Very easy to use and end product effective, bright orange makes them easy to find.

About 15 quid delivered if I remembered right

Fil Schiannini is a lovely bloke, blimey I'd have his kids if I were a laydee...... I use Ultimate Ear cos they got in first and I've had no reason to look elsewhere for custom hearing protection.

Squidgies, filtered, monitors, sleepers, 'walkman' moulds I've got the lot, they are fantastic but I'd give them all up for one night with Fil Schiannini :D

I've had a set of custom plugs for about 4 years now, originally bought for working in the offshore oil and gas game. They don't have any music or other function. Back when I got them they cost me $95 (about 35 -40 quid) and for work they have proved to be money well spent. The trouble I have with them is that inside a helmet, there is too much material outside the ear canal, which makes the plugs squash my ear, which makes it very uncomfortable. I tried sleeping with them once and had the same problem. I found some foam type plugs (bilsom 303s) which I find very good. The foam ones do come in different sizes, so it may be that the ones you are finding uncomfortable are too large for your ear canal and just keep expanding until you can't stand it any more.
Having said all that, custom plugs are definitely the way to go.
Also, at an occupational health and safety seminar, we were told by a nurse that the smallest thing you should put inside your ear is your elbow :rob In other words, don't go cleaning your ears out with cooton buds or anything else for that matter.:thumb2

If you get regular build up then get the doc to do an ear valet and then get in the routine of putting a few drops of olive oil into your ears on a regular basis. This will keep the wax soft enough that the ear will clean itself (that's wat earwax is there for). Olive oil has been used this way since Roman times, and I still remember when the only place you could buy it in the UK was in chemists...

Oh and Judge - :upyou

FWIW I've had Ultimate and Green Leopard (courtesy of Fil Schianni) and they're both excellent products. My only, tiny, gripe with the Ultimate plugs was that they were more difficult to remove that the Green Leopard ones.

My Ultimate monitors are clear and it's very easy to see if they need cleaning.

I don't use the wires to remove them but even so they have only lasted just over a year. The insulation on the wire adjacent to the plugs has failed. I was told that they had upgraded the wire but they couldn't tell me if mine were the old or the new spec. I was wondering if it was down to the System 5 helmet being a very snug fit around the base, I really have to spring it quite a lot to get it on and off.

They are so good however, both in terms of noise reduction and comfort, that I've sent my moulds back to have a new pair manufactured. Once I've got those I'll send the old ones back for repair.

Mine came with a little leather (look?) pouch to store them in and a cleaning device with a small loop of wire on the end for scooping out any wax etc. from the insides. All works great.
