cutting out

Now I know this is a Gs website but as my GS gives me no trouble I need for some opinion /advice regarding my 99xr250.
Any time I go through a puddle or through 1-2 ft of water she cuts out soon after and she re starts ok but is iffy for a while, now
would this be the plug lead, needing replacing or what?Im looking for any help advice you might have as its the wet season Im looking to cure this as soon as possible cause im getting flad out from kicking it .

My XR400 used to do the same, usually in the middle of a river crossing. Your coil, plug and CDI are getting wet and causing the bike to cut out. The most effective remedy I've found is to grease all your electrics with something like white grease (available from most off road stores).

Whip your tank off and apply liberal amounts of grease around the coil and the rest of the electrics under there. Make sure you cover all wire/lead entry and exit points. Smear loads around the HT cap on the plug and around the wiring block on top of the CDI. If in doubt, grease it. If your plug lead looks knackered, replace and grease. It's one of those items that costs bugger all but can screw your whole days riding.

Sometime the wiring behind the headlight can get wet but Honda's are better than others for this - mines left as is behind there even though I fitted an ignition lock to it.

The white grease is pretty resilient, even to jet washing, and I re-grease about every 5th ride.

Since I've been doing this the bike hasn't cut out once in a water crossing. Dry feet for me!!

The problem you are getting is caused by fuel starvation.

when the bottom of the carb tubes are under water the fuel stops entering the carb bowl. The fuel system needs to breath.

The solution is simple and cheap. go buy a couple of feet of windscreen washer tubing. ie, clear plastic pipe. and two or four
T-piece connectors.

cut the original carb tubes as high up as poss, ie near carb. put in the T pieces and then put say 12inches of pipe on each and route them under the seat. dont forget to leave the original tubes exiting down.

This way when the bottom parts of the tubes are under water
and effectively blocked, the systen starts to breath from the top through the new tubes.
