Dangly wires

Guys, I`ve purchased a full Akro kit and looked at the previous threads on how to fit blah blah blah but I can`t find anything about the exhaust baffle control cables.

Does anyone know what the best thing to do with them is? disconnect and leave flapping in the wind? disconnect at the other end?

Any advice always greatly appreciated.

Underwhelmed

Well for once I`m underwhelmed with the overpowering wave of responses

Most likely because it has been `done to death` and I have since found out that the dangly bits and the flappy thing remain.................

well lets see

well I`ve taken off the bowden cables from the exhaust turny/flappy thing so i am hoping that the new akro comes with all the gubbins for the flappy thing so i just have to reattach the cables.

anyone had any experience with this..................?

Hi mark,
you can put your flappy thing back on with your Akro, but i took the whole thing off cables included and got a local exhaust specialist to make me a connector pipe out of stainless. It looks a lot better, in my opinion you just have a straight through pipe without the ugly black box spoiling the lines.

When its removed it does not throw a fault code up on the dash. Mine has been running like that for two years now without issue.

I am sure a man of your talents can make a connector pipe.

Flappy Thing

I thought the Exup valve or whatever you want to call it was on a small link pipe of its own and therefore just connected between your y-piece and the end can. If the Akra is for the right model year I would have thought it would retain the flappy widget.
There is a clamp either side of the flap thing isn't there ?

so the akra front pipe replaces what is already there, then put the flappy thing in place then your akra end can.

I assume this to be the case but haven't fit one to a dohc before.

if you take the flappy thing out you will see a section of link pipe if you like coming out either side. Then remove the bowden cables from the body of the bike and leave them attatched to the flappy thing and store it away.

The Akro kit does not come with said flappy thing you just fit your Akro with the flappy thing as part of the exhaust.( it kind of becomes a ugly link pipe ) As i said previously i think it spoils the lines personally. Measure the diameter of the pipe coming out of the flappy thing and using your talent make a connector pipe.......Simples !!!

Flappy thing

I have just fitted a full Akro kit (headers and can) to my 2010 GS. The flappy valve thing was not needed in the new set up so had to be removed. The two cables from the exhaust valve go into a plastic box behind the frame tube which is connected to the bike electrics by a simple multi pin plug, once that plug was removed from the box and water proofed the black box with the flappy valve still attached was easily removed from the bike.

So, mikej, did you need a `filler` pipe to fill the gap or did the akro simply not need it? Are the cables easily removed from the `black box` behind the frame tube? What changes in performance did you notice?

The system I bought was a full Akro with the shotgun end cans (from a member of this forum). It was designed to be a complete replacement so I didn’t need a make up piece to fit the exhaust.
The cable to the black box was a simple multi plug, as far as I can remember just push in the little plastic locks and pull!!! I then put the plug into the finger of a rubber glove with some spray grease and sealed it with a cable tie. With the cable removed the black box and flap valve can be removed in one piece and kept for when the bike is sold and needs the original exhaust replaced.
The headers come with the fittings for the two original sensors that are in the OEM exhaust so when fitted the ECU sorts out the fuelling for you (or it seems to) will get Vines to check and adjust if required when it gets its next service but the bike is returning 54 MPG without riding like an Old man.
The throttle response is vastly better no hesitation at all. The bike seems to me to be better at all throttle settings but it’s most noticeable in the mid range it just picks up its skirts and goes now.
It also sound good as well, the two cans have baffles fitted which whilst gives a good sound does not get horrible loud. I have tried it with the baffles removed but it doesnt appear to make a difference apart from the noise level.

i have spoken to someone else who has purchased the full akro and there`s still needed the flappy thing otherwise there was a `gap`.

i guess all will be revealed when it arrives.

pretty much ask Mike said. I bought Remus Headers and an Akro can, so when i removed the original there was a gap. As stated mate i think it looked ugly so i did what Mike did and removed everything but got a connector pipe made which just finishes it off.

The throttle response is far better and it does sound fruity. I then went to Hilltop Motorcycles and had it re- mapped. Once this was done there was a huge difference in performance, it will pull from really low down without any flat spots, few on this forum have had it done i believe.

Purely as an aside, and from a few phone calls I have made, there seems to be a huge difference of opinion.

Half the people I spoke to said the flappy thing was crucial to the good running of the engine

The other half said its a waste of space and needs slinging in the scrap bin

I`m very pleased that, for you, its removal worked.
