Daunting repairs...

Your obviously a mechanical whizz.
Set fire to it.

the petrol would be too old to ignite by now!!:blast
as you probably not actually going to do this anyhow, I'll be brief. Before you do anything spray some WD around the spark plugs(you'll have to remove the leads) then go away, but not for 2 years, maybe 2 days.:blast Come bak and remove the plugs gently. Now spray some sewing machine oil into the plug holes, doesnt matter how much, but enough that you can be sure you have covered the piston crown. Now go away again for 2 days, NOT 2 years.:blast Then put the bike on centrestand and in top gear and try and rotate the rear wheel nice and gently forward and turn the engine over by hand.If this works and you can feel suck and blow at the plug holes at least you may have something worth salvaging, no point in cranking the motor and stuffing the bores before you even start.:blast Now find your heaviest ball pein hammer and give yourself the hardest hit you can across your thumbnail.Everytime you look at the black nail before it grows out, go and do something to your bike.:blast

So I cleared the garage enough to have a look at the bike.
Sadly I didn't get it running but...

I got the battery out and tested it with a meter without load - 0.225V - I think I'll be needing a new one :)

I also took a look at the throttle cable but I think it must be seized in the tubing. Possibly near the 'distributor'?
Am i right in thinking that getting to the throttle 'distributor' requires me to take the petrol tank off etc etc?

Is 'distributor' just a swanky name for a 2-way split in the main throttle cable?

Cheers

Yes, your battery is fukked, without a doubt.

As you are so indecisive though, and evidently need a kick up the harris to get you going (just like me :augie) dont bother buying a new one (yet), just stick some leads across to a car battery, preferably in a running car, but no matter if it's not.

A good squirt of wd40, AND MAYBE A SQUIRT OF QUICK START DOWN THE AIR INTAKE, TURN IT OVER, AND WHO KNOWS, IT MAY EVEN START :)

oops, caps lock got hit :blast

Many moons ago, I left a CX500 under a bike cover for about 18 months, finally got round to getting sorted when I needed it for work as I couldn't afford to take a car everyday to work.

Changed the oil, new battery, plugs a very good clean it fired up and was fine after that....

I'd hazzard a guess that it would fire up with a new battery and the choke on...even before you sort the cable. two year old oil aint the best but also not a hufge problem, but best to change the engine oil and filter as a first thing to do, get the WD40 on all cables and visible connectors to get damp out. There should be no damage to engine, and I doubt seals, but if you notice oil leaks then change what is needed.

As stated forget the cosmetics till later. get her fired up fisrt, (best to change oil and plugs first) that will put a smile on your face, then replace the throttle cable, give her a the rest of a service, alternator belt would be worth changing also while you are at it.

let us hear your progress.

Surely there is someone near you that will lend you some advice a saturday morning if you ask nicely... good lot on here...

He's Bideford, Devon :)

I believe we happen to know a kindly but grumpy old fart in that sort of area :augie

Indeed we do, but having reread the whole thread there seems to be a long time in between original tread and today, in TaDa's own words he has done nawt in over a year. Can't see said grumpy fellow have much simpaphy.

Shame could be an easy fix if TaDa just got to it.

"TaDa" as in sudden and unexpected may be a slightly inappropriate username in this case!:augie

Nip down your local parts shop and get a cheap battery. Stick it on and start her up.

That will enthuse you to do a bit more.

Change the throttle cable so it's rideable.

Then ride it to your nearest back street bike shop, not a steeler, and get them to give it a full service. Cos you ain't ever going to do it yourself are you, be honest?

Once you've started using it you can fit a decent battery, but a cheap one will get you started, probably last a couple of years if you keep it charged. I know some will disagree, but stick it on an optimate as well.

Grumpy old bastard here :rob I've got a very good and very reasonably priced mechanic as a best mate [25 years plus].....
I don't work on oilys, but he does.:thumb2
Drop me a PM:thumb2 TaDa and lets see what we can do :)

Wow!

I know, I know! I deserved it all!

I note that no one actually answered my 'how much' question :trippy

I see nearly all the replies required me to do something :blast

But I do see the point of seeing if its seized or not - maybe, just maybe I can do that one :)

The "how much" question? How long is a piece of string?

Might cost you £50 for a new battery and it's good to go or it might be cheaper to buy a good used 1150GS. Who knows?

Hi!

I left my bike out in the garden for a year and now have a non running bike

I know the throttle cable is broken and everytime I try to recharge it the alarm goes off.

I've had it in the garage for a year now but I've still not gotten around to fixing it!

I'm ok with spanners and the like but this has become a real block for me.

Firstly, is this likely to be a complete nightmare of a job - Should I throw in the towel straight away?

If not, has anyone got any suggestions as to a reasonable 'plan of attack'?

I want to get it back on the road, really I do, but its just so daunting!
Original post was well over a year ago. It should now read, "I left my bike in the garden for over two years".

Is TaDa taking the piss?

Is he not totally embarassed by his apathy?

Give the poor fecker a break.
He came on here with his hands up.

....and at least he's a subscriber.

At this stage he has come on with his hands up and trousers down around his ankles in embarrassment at the lack of effort, but fuck it we dont know what he has going on so fair fucks to the guy for still posting about his lack of effort.

Go in peas? What about the pies?

Forget it Tada. Ya kidding yourself.

Sorry, but you really are a lost cause. Surely you can see that. You can't even be arsed to ssek help..and it aint as if Canuck hasn't offered.

Big :bow for fessing up mate. Scrap it, sell it as it is, get a car/Honda/wha'eva and move on. Life's too short.

Unless it's a wind up LOL

So I stole a few hours from my family life last weekend and managed to get the spark plugs out (using plus gas and a large pair of stilsons - using the plug spanner that took me two hours to find in the carrier bag I had hidden it in with all the bits I'd taken off the last time and placed next to the rear wheel:))
I had it in gear but I couldn't apply enough effort to the rear wheel to turn it more than about 10 degrees.
Am I missing something (like not really meant to have done this?)?
The battery comes this week - who knows, maybe I'll get to fit it. The last time I tried to give the bike a charge the alarm went off all the tone so I think I'll beading ear plugs!
I will not be doing any work on the bike until after boxing day now so don't expect any progress until then:)
Merry Christmas to you all!

TaDa, you'll need the bike in top gear to easily turn over the engine. Dont bother charging the battery just put a new one in. It will probably start up with new plugs and new battery.
