De-unbelievable Problem

Fellas fellas, settle down, get this right and there will be no home work tonight

Today lesson is all about problem solving.

I’ll give you the problem and you give me the solution (simple)

I will be giving you some pointers so knuckle down and listen.

You’re out and about on your motorbike enjoying the freedom, dipping in and out of sweeping bends. Everything going great.

Then you pull up for a red traffic light and you bike suddenly cuts out, you push the start button and it starts. The lights are still red, you notice the rev counter is erratic and the bike stalls again. This happens on two more occasions, one while at a stand still and once while gearing down.

Sir Sir Sir, …………yes Toad

Toad, it’s the fuel pump controller Sir.

Good guess Toad but that not the answer, the bike had the new black fuel pump controller fitted a couple of weeks ago.

So let’s continue on with the problem. You’re away to work the following day, the bike appears to be running fine and it stalls again at a set of traffic lights……

Sir Sir, you need to do a throttle reset……..

That’s another good guess Pukmeister, but this has been performed a couple of times and the problem still exists.

Ok lads, let me help you a little. The spark plugs were removed and the results are as follows. Primary plugs are a nice brown colour but the secondary plugs are a little sooty. Also it looks like one of the fuel breather lines might have been squashed after the last air filter change.

Not on quick with your answers now lads are we.

Who said that, who said there’s no petrol in the tank……. ah it you AberdeenAngus, a right funny man, aright funny man indeed, now you know what you can do, gather up you bags and baggage and off to the principles office with ya. Who’s a funny man now……

And let that be a lesson to the rest of ya, there enough funny men with funny answers but not in my class lads.

TimOgara what do you think it might be,

A diagnostics Sir, that might help.

Good answer TimOgara but that was done a couple of weeks ago and nothing showed up

Sir Sir……… yes Wapping

Could it be that the wrong oil was used, perhaps that could cause this problem Wapping but the correct oil has been used.

Sir Sir, …………. Ah if it isn’t Mr Masters,
Sir what about the throttle cables and carbs…

You’re a right clever fella Masters’ but that was also completed a couple of weeks ago.

Another clue perhaps, if you grab the Throttle Position Sensor between finger and thumb and move it slightly the rev's go up and down.

No, no more answers..........

Right Lads, I’m running out of patents with ye lot, we’ll break for lunch and with a little bit of divine intervention maybe ye will come up with a solution………

And remember there’s no place for Funny men in my class……………

There is nothing to be gained by saying 'it was fixed or looked at two weeks ago'. Do all the checks yourself just to make sure you haven't missed anything. Good luck.

Sir, Sir I know please Sir....oh, I'm not allowed to post in the 1200 section:tears

TPS shouldn't be wobbly! Is it loose or buggered? If it's been synced with a wobbly TPS that might screw it up?

Can bet it's TPS....have had few cases here in Serbia recently in 2008 and 2010 Adventures...

And mechanic who diagnosed it (not BMW's one) says that TPS is ****ed due frequent washing with high pressure water spraying machines.

:beerjug:

Are you saying your TPS is loose on its mounting screws??

If so, you've answered your own question.

TPS should be rock solid, otherside the analogue input to the bikes CPU will vary.

A right bunch of funny men we have hear..........

TimOgara,........ get your arse back in that seat and pretend it's a 650

Richtel...... it's not loose but if you grab hold of it and push it forward and back the idle rpm change to the point that it will stall

Mr K, another smart arse comment like that and you too can get your bag and baggage together..

The TPS should be rock-solidly bolted to the throttle stub- surely there something wrong there. Also, when you replaced the battery, did you reset the throttle position travel measurements afterwards?

It's only a simple potentiometer, eg a wiper arm and variable resistance contact track. I suspect the arm has worn a groove in the resistance track through use, causing changes in resistance if pressed into/pulled out of the track along the axis of the operating spindle.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is that the TPS is internally worn and needs changing.
