Degree of confluence

Just came across this site and found it really interesting, and something that might be interesting for a ride out or two.

A degree of confluence is where there's a whole degree in latitude and it meets the line where there's a whole degree in longditude.

There are apparently 38 in the UK, most of which have been found and photographed already, and there are 14,027 on land in the world.

This site aims to record all these degree confluences , and the adventures that people have getting to them.

At any one time you can't be further than 49 miles from one.

Cool stuff....I'm going to look at the maps for the Scoots trip to see how close we'll come to one, as a bunch or TITS sitting on scoots right at a newly 'found' confluence would be cool

Just google for geocaching - the technical (a.k.a. nerd) name for this. There is a lot of it about - apparently it is the new trainspotting.

Hmmm....Geocaching is a bit different Mike.....
That's where someone buries a message or a 'treasure' or a log book or something and then gives clues and you have to use the GPS to find it, then add to the 'cache' for others to enjoy.....the locations are random and not along the lat/long grids like here.

This Degree of confluence project is similar but has a different aim- to catalogue a snapshot of the whole world in degrees and the adventures to get to those points.....

I just liked the concept....

The UK ones just seem to be picutres in farmer Giles' fields - I bet the rest of the world has some far more interesting stuff.

There are a couple of confluences rather near our route on the TITS trip......

I'll mention it to the other TITS and we'll keep an eye out as we go.....it'd be good publicity for the trip and a bit of a distraction from the endless miles of rocky sand around straight tarmac going down the coast of Mori
