Is it any good?
Need something to store photos/video, internet wireless access, word/powerpoint stuff, watching DVDs and buring photos/video to DVD.
Also, is it cheaper to buy a warranty for the laptop from somewhere other than Dell and is a warranty necessary after the first year?

Thanks in advance

better place to start from, is how much money do you want to spend.....:nenau

£400 is my top figure but I'd rather go somewhere else away from PC world/currys/comet

I've looked at tesco - what is the difference between AMD athlon/Celeron/pentium processors? Is it just a case of looking at the processor speed or is it more involved than that?

in the £400 market, buy something that has the highest numbers you can find

I bought one for my daughter, when she cleared off to Uni' in September.

I liked the fact that I could spec' XP.......simply because she was familier with it, and I could possibly () sort any minor problems over the phone. I replaced the bundled anti-virus software (McAfee IIRC) with AVG/ZoneAlarm, and so far it has been just fine. When she's home, she connects to the internet via our BT HomeHub WI Fi router thingy, and everything works as it should.

I was a touch concerned about the support that I might get from Dell, but again, so far so good. I had to contact them when I screwed up the access password. I got straight through to a guy who talked me through sorting it out.

I took out Dell's extended warranty. Having taken advice from the guys here, the educated opinion seems to be that, I WILL need it at some point.

If it all goes t*ts up this afternoon, I'll let you know............:D

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 and bought one for my son's 21st.
cant recommend them highly enough, you can decide which spec you want, down to battery size and screen type...more importantly you can have XP installed instead of Vista.

They even phone you up after a couple of months to make sure everything's ok.:clap
