At 08:30 this misty morning, I met a bunch of happy mates at Thurrock services, ahead of a 100 mile ride-out to the Brooklands centenary motorbike celebrations.

All was well past Eynesford and Sevenoaks until, out of the blue, the speedometer developed demonic possession.

The happy little pointer either sat at nought miles an hour, or flicked and danced merrily anywhere between 20, 40 and 60.

This is fine except the speed sensor is linked to the ABS (or visa-versa) so up comes the brake failure red triangle of death and a rather annoying message of 'Brake failure' flashes. Of course the brakes have not failed but BuMW diagnostics think they have.

Not wishing to continue and then, later, discover that the anchors have gone into a deep sulk, I turned tail, followed by the demons, and went home.

I now await BuMW recovery who will, I guess, take the bike to be exorcised at BuMW Park Lane, Battersea.

PS It was the celebration of the Brooklands centenary motorbike meeting that we were headed for. Must make a note to go to the next one in 2108.....

Spoken to BuMW assistance who were more than happy to pick the bike up.

However, that means I have to stay in, for 90 minutes when I could be out and about on God's day of rest.

The bike's brakes have obviously not failed, so I will ride it to Battersea tomorrow morning myself.

Either the speed sensor or the speedo head has gone...so it's nothing I can fix myself today. One odd side effect is that the bike clock (I have the trip computer version) flicks merrily between the time and the oil depth sensor, whilst I ride along, as if the bike thinks it is stationary. The average speed and mpg screens works fine, all the time.

It suites me to take it to Battersea as they can look at the seals on my panniers, leaking now and a suspect oil leak around the rear final drive seal, after 22k miles.

===

PS Good service from BuMW Assist...albeit I decided not to use them. Phone answered in five rings and they called me back, as promised.

FWIW my guess is the rear ABS sensor (also supplies speedo with data for speed), sensor duff or cable damaged. Good luck :augie

I guessed much the same.

I took a look at it this afternoon, nothing obviously wrong with it, other than being grubby. Plugged it in and out in the hope that the BuMW 'smart' system might sort itself out but, no joy.

I suppose a diagnostic tool would pick the fault up pretty pronto. Anyway, off to Battersea in the morrning.

Guess was only partly right: On full inspection it's a disintergrating final drive, takes the sensor out...

New final drive going on tomorrow....all under warranty.....Yer pays yer money...you gets pretty good service....:thumb2

rear drive

must have been damaged by demon braking , on outside of bus in greece;;;;;they all do that sir
