Been in Normandy all week in the Campervan...

Booked in at Dieppe...customs OK..
Security....noticed they were scanning people by a hand held metal detector/scanner...
My turn..
He says,are you carrying knives..?
Er no...he then promptly scans me with the hand held scanner and says OK...!!..
I can go....
Bearing in mind,I have a full canteen of knives in the Campervan...!!!
What did he achieve by this meaningless search..?

The French customs asked me the same question when we were coming back in the motorhome one time. I answered yes I have a drawer full of large kitchen knives. Oh not them she said, ones you could hurt someone with!!! At this point we were told to proceed. 😂😂😂

Been doing that at Hull for a few years before you get on the ferry, checking bike luggage for knives but not campervans and cars.

I think that scanner is for explosive traces.
They once searched our bikes are Dover on the way out and asked us if we had any guns. I said you have got to be kidding. We'd be smuggling them back.

Well how would one get a camper van or car on a bike? 😂😂😂

Boarding the ferry at Portsmouth a couple of years ago we were asked if we had knives. I declared my Swiss Army knife, which the simpleton took away to “check”. He came back and gravely handed it back to me declaring it “legal”. We were stood next to a campervan window with a big knife block in full view….

Been asked about knives quite a few times on departure at the Newhaven end. Once I was in tight lycra cycling kit. And I’m hiding the panga, where??

None of the systems are fit for purpose, they are just going on body language....In my opinion.

A baddie is unlikely to say "Yes" if he/she is carrying an offensive weapon.

And if they ask you if you have knives and you say no, and they then search further and find some, you'll be faced with carrying concealed or undeclared knives, which open up a whole new can of worms.
