What are the differences between the Garmin 660 and the 660LM and will the 660LM fit into the BMW 1V cradle. Having huge problems with my BMW Nav 1V which won't unlock maps though it says it has 2016 maps installed. It worked before but now it refuses.

Big European trip coming up and i can't trust my present unit so need to purchase a new one.

Thanks

660 and 660LM are the same, the LM comes with 'Lifetime Maps' the 660 doesn't.

Before you rush off buying a replacement for your (very good) Nav V, have you tried:

1. A warranty or goodwill replacement from BMW

2. A warranty or goodwill replacement from Garmin

Significant problems with modern GPS devices (of all sorts) that are reasonably new are now incredibly rare, more often than not due to operator error. Don't give up just yet.

You say you used the maps before and all worked, was this with the BMW Nav 1V you have now or was it with a different unit, if it was with a different unit they will not work as the maps will be locked to that unit. Do you or did you have the maps installed on a sd card if so is there a file on the card called .gma or an unlock file this is the unlock file and and if its missing you will get that error. If you open basecamp and go to maps and then manage map products and then to unlock regions your unlock code should be there, if its not it will say something like region locked.
Now if its unlocked and it is the map for the BMW Nav 1V you should be able to re send the whole map to the sd card and it should put a gma file in also, of course this will only apply if its the map for the unit.

Thank you very much for your help, I use Mapsource as Basecamp for me, is a pain. Will try your suggestions and hopefully that will cure the problem. Thanks again for your time.

The same would apply to mapsource only instead of going to maps you would go to utilities to view your unlock info, a good way to check if the maps are indeed unlocked within mapsource itself is to select the map tool in mapsource you will see a load of shapes appear on the map and when you run your mouse pointer over the map they should highlight a colour usually yellow, also make sure you have your map selected go to view and then switch to product you should have your map ticked.

Hope this helped.

Try phoning garmin, it worked for me, they sent me a missing gma file and instructions on unlocking the maps in mapsource and basecamp.
