Thanks for all the tips... no comments on the Olympus E-500 is this because it's new or just average/

cheers

Buy a Nikon or Canon dSLR. end of. Why buy something second rate?

as for the panasonic lumix, it's light years away from the current dSLR's as is all the point & shoot cameras out there.

Got a Cannon D10 (now replaced I believe). It's excellent, and all you'll need unless you are a pro. Got if from New York, about 1/2 the UK price - it was still well worth flying over there for a long weekend to get all the gear you need - you'll still be quids in, just check that the warranties are world-wide (which the Cannon is). Got Sigma lenses, same deal, huge memory cards, ditto. All in all, well chuffed. US = good value, UK = Expensive it seems for this type of gear..

The Canon EOS10D has been replaced directly by the Canon EOS20D, but as with all things, any of the current crop of dSLR's surpass this model, including the EOS300D, EOS350D, D50, D70, D70S, EOS20D etc etc.

Emmm. Thought that the EOS300D was a de featured plastic bodied EOS10D?

Agreed, but with a simple software download the vast majority of those features can be turned on + second hand 10D's are difficult to find and the owners still want the kind of money which you can buy a new 350D/D50 from your local high street or even better from a HK ebay seller.

Not worth it IMO.

The guy I use URGalaxy I highly recommend. I get any lenses from him, and hes been very reliable.

I like metal bodied cameras... so the 10D sounds intresting what price should I pay for a second hand one.

Still very intrested in the Olympus

I've also been recomended the Minolta 5D because I have a 9000 SLR and a couple of nice lens.

Many thanks for all the links and opninions

I guess it really comes down to whether your going to sell up and change 'systems' or not. My advice would be to check whether the Minolta 5D is compatible with your lenses.

Just because it may share the same lens fitting doesnt necessarily mean its compatible, as many current lenses and bodies employ clever electronics in the lenses to tell the body of distance information and such like. Same goes for flash guns etc.

Also your current lenses will produce an image circle for 35mm film, as the CCD/CMOS sensors in dSLR's are smaller you get a FOV crop, so what you consider to be a wide lens will be way less wide when you fit it onto a non-FF dSLR.

It may be that it fits and works in M mode, but not in P/S/M. You need to check this.

If it doesn't your better off selling all your current kit as a whole and changing systems to Canon or Nikon (go Nikon :D). All IMHO.

Also, on the subject of metal bodies. Basically any semi-pro body will be metal. Any entry level body will be plastic.

If I was in the market to buy a new sub-£2k body, the new Nikon D200 (likely to be <£1k from HK) is an amazing peice of kit for the money. Easily comparable to bodies costing twice, even three times as much.

I've got the Canon D350. The picture quality is awesome, slightly better than Nikon because of CMOS (patented Canon technology Nikon can't use) that results in very slightly less jaggies.

Overall its the lens that you pay for. The Canon D350 standard lens costs £100 and is rather crap, having only moderate quality. On dpreview, which is THE site for camera reviews, the images shown for the D350 are for £1k+ lenses and are amazing compared to stock D350 lens.

If I was doing again i'd get a D300 and a good lens, though the D300 seems to be retaining resale value well.

For anyone interested, I've got a Canon 10D for sale either with, or without, a lens. Lens is the 28-105 USM II (the metal mount, that retails at £190). Camera is £490, or with lens £590. Both items are indistinguishable from new. I've recently bought a Canon 1DMark2, plus a couple of L-lenses, so I need to sell it to finanace any more photographic purchases (maybe the new 24-105 IS USM?)

Regards,

Charles

Pentax *isDS (not DL) would be my choice in that range. Can put excellent (but cheap as chips) Russian lenses to it's bayonet mount without any adapters.

Happy shooting, Margus

Hi
Do you mind explaining what you mean by this, are you referring to noise problems etc ?

Ill write a list :D (not all P&S suffer from all but some)

* Power up times
* Shutter lag
* Noise
* Lack of DoF
* General speed of operation

I guess the two main ones are noise, and general speed of operation.

I've got the Canon EOS300D. Cracking piece of kit.

Then my lad used it for a school trip (I should have known better) and it started giving an "Error 99" code. Two months out of warranty. Bugga.

Tried all the internet fixes to no avail so it went back to Mr Canon's spanner monkeys to be fixed at a cost of 192 Blairos.

Now a cracking piece of kit again.

I'd back up what was said before about going into a Jessops if there's one nearby. They have people there who are experts in their field, rather than the usual YTS muppets other high street companies employ these days. They will also price match.

I went around in circles on this one...

Liked the Canon 350D because you guys said it was good
The Olympus looks good but you need both lens
The Nikon 50 something got good write ups but did'nt feel right

Brought a Minolta 5D!

Why?
Decided being able to use my exsisting 75 -300 mm lens was worthwhile
Could also use my 24 -27 lens although not quites as usefull but does give good quality
Fears of second hand values are not important as I never sell anything!
I'm abit if a Minolta man... I use to sell their office equipment
The standard lens is quite handy 18 -75mm
It's got anti shake that works well with all my lens
The features good and really easy to use; flash slow and 2nd shutter sync etc.
ISO range is good 80 -3200
The metering is fantastic especially in low light and shadows
It's more than fantastic it's amazing and with the anti shake and 3200ISO you can take pictures without the flash
My local Jessops sold me one for 469 quid and gave me a 15 quid case
Oh and you get 100 quids worth of DiMAGE software...not sure if that's worth anything

Thanks for all the advise

Little known fact I was a pro photographer for 6 years all 5X4 work and 2 1/4 square work... gave it up in 84 when I was asked to leave the UAE for being a rebel!

Good man Health to use it. :thumb

I'm still agonising. :D . Can't work out if I'm too lazy to cart an SLR and Lenses. Still some folk worry about were there next meal is coming from!! :)
