Whilst poking around changing the timing chain last year I noticed that my Diode board had been bolted directly to the engine case without the rubber dampers. Guilt got the better of me so I decided to do the right thing and fit the dampers back. Fitted them this week-end and found the front cover no longer fits coz the diode board is now taking up to much room and stops the cover from fitting. Doh!!!!! Never seen that before so I wonder if my diode board is an after market jobbie that is "Thicker" than a normal one. Any ideas?

Could you post a couple of pictures of the board in situ ?? That would help the experts :thumb.

Is the engine an original GS ?? The road bikes had the diode board rigidly attached.

Bob.

Earlier Airheads did not use the rubber mounts but connected directly to the engine casing, if you fit rubber mounts you'll have problems with the diode board clearing the front cover plus you'll also need to add an earth strap.

I upgraded the diode board on my 85 g/s pd to an Omega one, no issues as I went with direct mounting which was used on original.

Well.....I could do but as it was a nice day yesterday and it must have been in the original config (bolted to the engine) for the last X years, I returned it to how it was and went for a ride in the countryside around Cologne. With the dampers fitted the diode board only just prevented the front cover from fitting. Got to be 1 or 2 mm proud at most. Had three other Beemers before but I cant remember seeing the Board stick out so far. The dampers are the original BM spec as I had to show the local BM garage spares man where they were in the parts book and they were fully screwed into the engine.

What year and model is the bike?

Its a 94 wobble box. R80gs with the fairing/roo bar. I had an even earlier paralever r100 gs with the head light cowl and that had the dampers fitted and an R80 r that also had them. This is the first I had without the dampers

Weird. 94 model would have had the dampers fitted from the factory, the earlier bikes that did not use dampers had a different casing to fit the board directly it, I had a set of mounting dampers here when I changed the diode board and thought I'd fit them but could not fit the front cover.

I thought it was strange too!!! Oh well, I guess I have some more spares in the garage that I'll never use.

U must have read my mind. I was just thinking that. I'll check out the engine and frame numbers when I get home tonight. I've had this one 5 years now. I bought it off a Lada mechanic who used it for long distance Eurohaul holidays with his missus (they had one each). He had just finished prep for the next holiday when his wife decided they should "upgrade" to 1150g/s. It's been the best beemer I've ever had. Only one electrical snag caused by a relay failure since I've had it. Even then I could still ride about just didn't have any indicators. He spend a fortune on it. Wilbers front and rear Seibenrock kit, custom made Y piece. I saw him last year and he'd ditched the 1150 and had a Bonneville. Just didn't like the newer version. I'm thinking of buying another and getting the engine tweeked just to see where we end up.

Right finally got my frame and engine number to hand. How can I tell if this engine is the same that it was born with? With some types it easy, they are both numbers are the same. Mine aren't but both have a 93 in them. Is that the year it was born?
