DIY 24k service

I'm going to be doing the 24k service on the 12 in the next week or so and wanted to ask about the valve clearances. I've looked in the book and online and am clear on the process just wanted to know when on initially checking people find these are out. I did my KTM recently and it was spot on, do you find on the GS they always need adjusting every 6k?

When I started doing my own servicing, I found that initially the clearances were wayout, ie very loose(previously dealer serviced). Set mine correctly at 18k and have not needed to adjust them since. Bike has now got 42k and sounds sweet. I checked them at the weekend and still found them to be spot on. Take you time and do it properly on a cold engine and they maynot need adjusting for many thousands of miles.

I do most of the servicing myself, bike goes into dealers once ayear to have the computer downloads/ABS bits done. I have found that changing the Air Filter more regularly keeps the bike running smoothly.
Engine oil I change every 3K with the filter every 6K. Gear box and final drive oil every 6k. I know that these fluid change intervals are shorter than B*W recomend, but I feel happier doing it that way.

No one knows, every bike is different, thats why you check them

If you don't check your not really servicing it are you, what you'll be doing is just an oil change !!!.

I've heard you can check the valves with a big screw driver (just wiggle it in the gap, if it fits should be fine) and just top the oil up until it comes out the top (it'll be nice and full then and shouldn't need topping up for ages)...jobs a good un.

Oh and I'll oil the brakes to stop that squeal too.

I've heard you can check the valves with a big screw driver (just wiggle it in the gap, if it fits should be fine) and just top the oil up until it comes out the top (it'll be nice and full then and shouldn't need topping up for ages)...jobs a good un.

Oh and I'll oil the brakes to stop that squeal too.
